The YouTube VR app is already available on Google's own Daydream View as well as HTC Vive and PlayStation VR, and now the app is heading to another VR platform.
YouTube VR is launching on Samsung's Gear VR headsets. The app will become available from the Oculus Store starting this week, giving Gear VR users the ability to enjoy YouTube content and experiences in virtual reality.
Samsung Gear VR is a popular VR platform because it's affordable compared to higher-end headsets like the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. It's also portable, letting you enjoy VR anywhere just by popping your phone into the headset rather than requiring you to be tethered to an expensive gaming console or PC. This is why it's great to see Google bringing YouTube VR to Gear VR headsets and giving even more VR users access to the content that YouTube has to offer.
Google today also announced some new YouTube VR features. First up, the YouTube VR app will now let you watch VR videos in a communal, virtual space. Just click on the "Watch Together" icon beneath the play controls on your Daydream View or Gear VR and you can watch videos and chat with your friends.
Google also says that it's bringing more exclusive experiences to YouTube VR. These include following Portugal. The Man backstage before a show in the VR180 Rockstar VR series, following global female leaders the series The Female Planet, and an experience from SoKrispyMedia that'll put you in a video game that you must escape before being trapped.
