Mario Kart Tour is the next mobile game from Nintendo

Mario Kart Tour logo official

After releasing Super Mario and Animal Crossing games on mobile devices, Nintendo has revealed which of its properties it'll be bringing to smartphones next.

Nintendo will launch Mario Kart Tour on mobile. Little is known about the game, but Nintendo says that it'll launch "in the fiscal year ending March 2019."

No platforms were named, but both Super Mario Run and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp were released on Android and iOS, so it seems likely that Mario Kart Tour will hit both platforms as well.

Mario Kart is another major series for Nintendo, with eight main entries in total. What will be interesting is seeing how Nintendo adapts Mario Kart for the smartphone and how well the game will work with touchscreens.

Nintendo is bringing Mario Kart to smartphones

Nintendo has announced the latest of its IPs to make the leap to smartphones, and it’s a big one: Mario Kart. An app called Mario Kart Tour is set to be released in the next financial year, meaning anywhere between April 2018 and March 2019.

No details about Mario Kart Tour have been made available other than its existence, but the Mario Kart franchise is one of Nintendo’s biggest. Yesterday the company announced that 14.86 million Switch consoles have been sold, along with about half as many copies of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe — a straight port of a game that managed to sell a further eight million copies even on the Wii U.

Nintendo is likely to have more mobile titles in the works. The company originally planned to have released five...

LG bootloop class action settlement offers $425 in cash or $700 toward a new LG phone

LG G5 hands-on

Some LG devices have had a nasty history of bootloops, so much so that LG ended up facing a class action lawsuit about it. Now it looks like a settlement has been reached.

Law firm Girard Gibbs has set up a website dedicated to the settlement of a class action lawsuit against LG about the bootloop problems that affected many of its phones. According to the website, which was up earlier today before disappearing, members of the class action lawsuit could get either $425 in cash or a $700 rebate toward a new LG phone.

The class action lawsuit focused on the LG G4, LG G5, LG V10, LG V20, and Nexus 5X for their bootloop issues.

The website included a proof of claim for those who took part in the class action lawsuit to fill out. That form must be filled out by February 12, 2018.

Having your phone reboot over and over and over again is frustrating, as most people have a lot of personal data on their phone and rely on it to stay connected to what's happening in the world. It's good to see that customers affected by LG's bootloop issues will be compensated for dealing with the problem.

Should Android copy iPhone X's gestures?

Apple iPhone X

One of the defining elements of the iPhone X, aside from that "notch design", is the fact that there isn't a physical Home button on the front of the handset. This is an element of the iPhone that has been present right out of the gate for the smartphone, so its departure is certainly noteworthy.

But not just because the button is gone, either. What Apple replaced it with was also catching plenty of attention back in September, and again in November when the phone launched: All those new gestures. For folks who used webOS back in the day, it might not have felt completely ridiculous, but for the longstanding iOS holdouts, it is admittedly quite the change.

I am personally a big fan of the gestures on the iPhone X, just as I was with webOS way back when. I'm all for more webOS in my life, any way that I can get it.

The iPhone X's gestures came back into the news cycle yesterday, thanks to OnePlus. The smartphone manufacturer is rolling out an option for OnePlus 5T owners (it's currently in beta, so not available to the general public) to remove the standard Android navigation buttons, and instead opt to use gestures that are very, very similar to Apple's implementation.

Sliding up from the middle of the screen gets you Home, and pausing after sliding up will open the app switcher. Swiping up from the bottom left or bottom right of the display will get you to go back. In practice the gestures look pretty intuitive, and I imagine that OnePlus 5T owners in the future that adopt the functionality will like it.

OnePlus hopping on that gesture bandwagon led a lot of folks to go back-and-forth on whether or not it's a good idea. Should other companies copy Apple in this same way?

Like I said above, I'm a fan of gestures and while I wouldn't normally say that any company should outright copy another, I am all for more gestures being adopted into smartphones.

I think Android might have a bit of a bonus, though, compared to iOS. After all, if you want the previous standard of operating iOS, with the Home button, you can't get the iPhone X. However, if you want the standard for operating Android on the OnePlus 5T, you can just turn that option on and the gesture navigational controls are gone. You can switch back-and-forth as you see fit.

Options are a good thing, to be sure. And I can see why someone would prefer that over just having one thing. "Adopt or switch platforms" is pretty rough. I know I wouldn't know what I'd do if I actually hated the iPhone X's gestures. After all, this is the future of iOS.

But, it got me wondering. Do you think gesture navigational controls are the future of smartphones in general? Should more Android manufacturers adopt this method like OnePlus is currently testing? Or should Android just stick to its buttons? Let me know!

Nokia 6 and Nokia 5 getting Android Oreo updates

Nokia 6 official group

The OnePlus 5T isn't the only Android phone getting its Oreo update this week.

HMD Global has announced that it's now pushing Android 8.0 Oreo to the Nokia 5 and Nokia 6. This over the air update will go out in phases to ensure everything works smoothly, so it may take a day or two to hit your device.

As for what's included, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 owners can expect new features like picture-in-picture and notification dots. Also included are the January 2018 Android security patches.

HMD Global has been working hard on getting its Nokia phones updated to Oreo, pushing updates to the Nokia 6 (2018), Nokia 7, and Nokia 8 in recent months. Now we can add the Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 to that list. These updates are good for HMD because it shows consumers that the company is fairly quick about updating their phones and it could convince them to make their next smartphone a Nokia-branded one.

Google Flights will now predict flight delays

Google Flights predict flight delays

Google Flights is becoming an even better tool for searching airline prices.

Google says that Google Flights is improving when it comes to delays. Not only will Google Flights now share the reasons for a flight's delay, but the service will try to predict flight delays using historic flight status data and machine learning algorithms. Google says that it'll only flag a delay when it's at least 80 percent confident in its prediction of a delay.

Additionally, Google Flights will now surface more info about the extra fees related to a flight. For example, it'll show you if options like overhead bin space, the ability to select your seat, and baggage fees are included with the price of a flight or if they cost extra.

It can be frustrating when you're trying to save some money by purchasing a cheaper fare type like "Basic Economy", only to find out that options that you want like the ability to select your seat cost extra. Google Flights is working to eliminate that frustration by clearly surfacing that info, making it worth a try the next time that you're searching for a flight.

Spotify launches free Stations app that's all about playlists

Spotify Stations Android app screenshots

Spotify is known for its on-demand streaming music service, but today the company launched a new music app.

Stations is a new experimental app from Spotify. The app is all about playlists and is sort of like Pandora, learning what you like and creating personalized stations for you based on that info. There are stations based on genres, top songs, moods, and more.

This new app is meant to be a simple way to listen to music. "When you have access to all the music in the world, finding the right thing to play can feel like a challenge," Spotify says. Stations is meant to get you listening to music immediately and then learning about you and playing stuff that you'll like.

Another notable aspect of the Stations app is that it's free, meaning you can listen without needing a Spotify Premium subscription.

Stations is currently only available on Android, and there's no word on when or if an iOS version might launch. The app is also currently only available in Australia, but if you're comfortable with sideloading apps, you can get the APK right here.

The Stations app looks pretty need, offering a colorful background and big text that's easy to read and scroll through. The prospect of just launching an app and having Spotify play music for you is appealing, too, meaning you don't have to be faced with the decision of what exactly you should play. This is just an experiment, so it's unclear how much attention Spotify will pay to Stations going forward, but it's a pretty nice experiment right now.

Amazon's QR-like 'SmileCodes' are the key to discounts and Lockers

Amazon will start rolling out its own version of QR codes, TechCrunch reports. Called SmileCodes, they function just like a typical QR code -- scan it with your phone and see where it leads -- but they'll only be scannable through the Amazon app and, naturally, they feature the very recognizable Amazon smile right in the center. According to TechCrunch, Amazon has been piloting them for the past few weeks in pop-up shops and Amazon Lockers in Europe and next month, SmileCodes will hit the US. They'll debut in magazines such as Cosmopolitan and Seventeen.

Spotify is testing a Pandora-esque standalone Android app

Spotify apparently has plans to launch another music app -- one that's more like Pandora's original service, or like a radio, if you will. The company has begun testing a playlist-based app called "Stations" for Android, and according to its Google Play listing, it plays music as soon as you launch it. You'll have to "like" tracks in the app so it can create personalized stations for you, but like Spotify's main app, Stations learns what music you prefer the more you listen. All you need to do to switch stations and automatically start playing other music is to scroll through your playlists.

Google is using AI to predict flight delays

Flight delay alerts are helpful, but they usually depend on airlines notifying you in a timely fashion... and they're not always quick on the draw. Google, however, is happy to fill that gap. It's updating its Flights feature with not only explanations for delays, but predictions. Its machine learning system will use historic flight status info to forecast delays, and flags them when there's at least an 80 percent confidence the prediction will come true. The company stresses that you should still show up on time (you don't want to miss a flight due to pessimism), but this could give you a hint of trouble before you set foot in the airport.

Apparently, it discovered several stability issues in 8.0 during testing, which it believes will be addressed by 8.1. So, instead of rolling out 8.0 to the public, the company has decided to "focus [its] energy" on its successor. Alexa can send SMS messages using your voice

To date, messaging with Alexa has meant sending screeds using Amazon's in-house system, which doesn't do you much good if your recipient doesn't have an Echo speaker. You won't have to be quite so selective from now on, however, as Amazon has added support for SMS messaging through Alexa-capable devices connected to Android phones (there's no word on iOS). You can explicitly tell the voice assistant to "send an SMS," but it will also pick SMS automatically if you message a contact that doesn't have an Echo.

Amazon Alexa can now send SMS messages to Android phones

Amazon Echo Dot hands-on

Amazon's Alexa assistant is expanding its bag of tricks once again.

Amazon has confirmed that you can now send SMS text messages using Alexa. Simply ask Alexa to send a message to a contact and Alexa will figure out how to send it, whether that's using Amazon's own Alexa messaging or using SMS if the recipient doesn't have an Alexa device.

The bad news is that there is a catch here, which is that this feature currently only works when sending text messages to Android phones.

If you've got an Android phone with the Alexa app, you can able this feature by going into the Conversations tab of that app and then selecting Contacts > My Profile > Send SMS.

You can then ask Alexa to send a "message" and it'll try to send a message to the recipient's Alexa app, then go to SMS if that fails. If you'd like for Alexa to just send an SMS right away, you can ask it to send a "text message".

This feature is now available on Alexa devices that support calling and messaging. Amazon says that it's not available for iPhone users because Apple  doesn't offer its messaging API to third-parties.

This sounds like a pretty nifty addition to Amazon's Alexa assistant. Sure, you can already use Google Assistant to text your friends, but this feature means that you've got another way to text someone if your phone is in the other room charging or something but you've got an Alexa device nearby.

Samsung sets record Q4 profits ahead of Galaxy S9 launch

Samsung's head honcho was found guilty of bribery last year and its vice-chairman stepped down due to "unprecedented crisis," but that didn't affect the Korean conglomerate's cashflow at all. In fact, the company did very well in the fourth quarter of 2017 and the year as a whole: it posted a $14 billion operating profit for the quarter and $50 billion for 2017, thanks mostly to its strong memory and display business. That dwarfs its $7.9 billion operating profit for the fourth quarter of 2016, though that year's earnings were admittedly tainted by the Note 7 fiasco. One of the biggest reasons why Samsung's display division did so well in Q4 2017 is Apple, whose exclusive orders for the X's OLED displays helped it offset the rising won.

Essential delays Oreo update for Essential Phone, will release Android 8.1 instead of 8.0

Essential Phone hands-on

Essential recently released its third Android Oreo beta for the Essential Phone and said that a public Oreo update was "very close." Now it looks like Essential's plans have changed.

Essential has announced that it's opting instead to release Android 8.1 for the Essential Phone instead of Android 8.0, which its previous betas were based on. This means that the public release of Oreo for the Essential Phone will be delayed "a couple weeks."

As for why this decision was made, Essential says that it's found "several stability issues" in Android 8.0 that it thinks will be fixed in Android 8.1.

An Android 8.1 beta update will be released for the Essential Phone soon so that Essential can fine-tune Oreo before its released to the public.

This news is disappointing for Essential Phone owners, but it actually seems like it a smart move for Essential. Rather than pushing out an Android 8.0 update with known stability issues and then dealing with all that, it can wait a few weeks and push out an Android 8.1 update with those bugs squashed. Meanwhile, Essential Phone owners have to extend their wait a bit, but that means that they'll get a better update that also happens to be the newest version of Android.

OnePlus 5T Open Beta 3 update brings new navigation gestures

OnePlus 5T hands-on

A new OnePlus 5T beta update is now rolling out, and it brings with it an interesting new feature.

OnePlus today released the Open Beta 3 update for the OnePlus 5T. It brings with it new navigation gestures that you can enable by disabling the Android navigation buttons in the 5T's Settings app.

According to users on Reddit that've already installed this update, you can swipe up from the bottom left or bottom right of the OnePlus 5T's screen to go back. Swiping up from the center of the bottom will take you home, and pausing briefly after swiping up from the center will show your recent apps. You can see a video of the gestures in action here.

While it wasn't the first smartphone to have gesture navigation, that feature has been in the spotlight lately thanks to the iPhone X. These gestures for the OnePlus 5T are still in beta and it's unclear when or if they'll launch to the public, but users on the beta say that the gestures work well so far, and so a public launch might be good to see since it'd give customers the chance to see more of their display by ditching the nav bar.

The Open Beta 3 update for the OnePlus 5T also adds a pick-up gesture switcher for the Phone, removes the Clipboard function, adds a CPU security patch, and more.

Here's OnePlus's full changelog for this update:

Apple said to be delaying new iOS features to 2019 to focus on improving performance

iPhone X hands-on video

Following Apple's preview of the upcoming iOS 11.3 update, a new report may have spilled details on Apple's update plans post-iOS 11.3.

Apple had planned to roll out new features to iOS in 2018, according to Axios, but it has decided to push them to 2019 in order to focus more on improving performance and quality. Some of the features that've been delayed include refreshes to the iOS home screen and in-car UI, improvements to core apps like Mail, and better photo capturing, photo editing, and sharing.

This doesn't mean that 2018 will have zero new iOS features. Apple is said to be working to improve the augmented reality, digital health, and parental controls in iOS.

Apple will reportedly also work to make iPhones more responsive and less prone to needed customer support.

Each fall, Apple typically releases a major new software update with many new features. iOS 11 has been criticized for being buggier than other recent iOS releases, though, which may have prompted Apple to push new iOS 12 features into 2019 and focus on making iOS run better instead. Considering how important a smartphone is to many people and how much they rely on it to hold their personal data and stay connected to the world, focusing on improving iOS performance may not be a bad idea.

iOS 11.3 will let iPhone X users approve family purchases with Face ID

iPhone users will a get a handful of new capabilities when Apple releases iOS 11.3 this spring, one of which is sure to be welcomed by parents with an iPhone X. With the introduction of Face ID, some processes got a little easier for iPhone users, but parents who approve their children's purchases through the Ask to Buy feature have been a little irritated with the system. That's because while Touch ID-enabled iPhones let parents use their fingerprints to approve a child's purchase request, the iPhone X has been forcing parents to input their password each time. However, that's about to change because it appears iOS 11.3 will allow Face ID for purchase approvals.

Apple being investigated by US government about slowing down older iPhones

iPhone 6, iPhone 6s comparison

Apple recently said that it's going to be more transparent about iPhone battery health with the iOS 11.3 update, telling users when they need to replace their battery and letting them disable the performance throttling that's landed the company in hot water. That's not the end of this saga, though.

The US Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission are investigating Apple about its updates that slowed performance on iPhones with older batteries. Sources speaking to Bloomberg say that the agencies are looking into whether Apple violated securities laws regarding disclosures about its updates that throttled older iPhones.

So far, the DOJ and SEC have requested information from Apple. Because the investigation is still early, it's unclear if the agencies will actually take an action against Apple.

Apple apologized for not being more clear about its actions after the news of its performance-throttling updates came out, but we've still seen class action lawsuits and now this investigation come out. The good news is that Apple will be more transparent about iPhone battery health and performance in the future, but for now, it'll have to deal with the DOJ and SEC.

After it launched with mixed reviews, more than 100 child development experts, health advocacy groups, educators, and parents have called on Facebook to shut down Messenger Kids, a spinoff of the company’s messenger app that’s specifically designed for children ages six to 12. The collective, led by the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, addressed its open letter to CEO Mark Zuckerberg, warning that the app is “harmful to children and teens,” and that it could “undermine children’s healthy development.”

The app, which debuted in December, was created as a workaround for parents who want to communicate with their children via Facebook, but cannot use the regular version since federal law prohibits children under the age of 13 from...

Justice Dept and SEC are reportedly reviewing Apple’s iPhone slowdowns

In December, Apple admitted to slowing older models of iPhones, saying the practice kept older phones with aging batteries from suddenly rebooting. Apple is now facing multiple lawsuits in the US and abroad as well as an investigation in France. And now, Bloomberg reports, the US Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission are looking into whether the company's handling of the slowdowns violated any securities laws.

This app raised $13 million the same day it released a sexist nightmare of a short film

One of the more fun results of the age of infinite apps is serialized fiction, presented in installments so tiny that calling them “digestible” is sort of like calling a single almond “dinner.” There are good chat fiction apps that use texting as the medium for compelling stories. There are bad romance novels that are more fun to read with GIFs.

There’s also Yarn, a chat fiction app owned by Mammoth Media. Mammoth raised $13 million in a Series A round of funding today, as reported by Variety, and the release of a new horror series Hack’d (!!!) was timed to the announcement. Hack’d stars Musical.ly influencer Kristen Hancher, and was directed by Chris Le, whose biggest credit is a robot drug cartel movie called Juarez 2045.

I love horror...

Birth control app remains under investigation by regulators, despite company’s claims to be ‘all clear’

Sweden’s medical regulator says it is continuing to investigate the contraceptive app Natural Cycles over 37 unintended pregnancies, despite claims from Natural Cycles that the company is “all clear” following the investigation. The Medical Products Agency (MPA) says reports that the investigation has closed are incorrect.

Natural Cycles, the contraceptive app that is certified in the EU as a form of birth control, was hit with a complaint earlier this month after Södersjukhuset hospital in Stockholm reported the app to the MPA. Thirty-seven women had visited the hospital for abortions after becoming pregnant while using the app.

Earlier today, Natural Cycles put out a statement saying it was “all clear” after the closure of...

Do you set a budget for device purchases?

Apple iPhone X

While there are still some holdouts, even in the flagship range, the consensus from some of the biggest names in the smartphone market seems to be that our devices can get even more expensive. While Apple definitely led that charge with the iPhone X in 2017, they weren't the only ones. OnePlus's flagship devices have seen price hikes over previous models. And Samsung even broke the $1,000 mark with a Galaxy S8 variant last year, too.

Smartphones are a requirement for most people now. They used to be this extravagance, something you'd only see once in awhile --if ever. But now they are the way people connect on a regular basis. As such, it's not a surprise that companies figured out they can change more for those devices, and, ultimately, people are going to pay the fee.

It seems to be working out, too.

If you watch the iPhone news cycle, then you are probably aware that there have been a steady stream of conflicting reports that the iPhone X is not selling well, or that it's the best selling device all across the globe. Apple will give a bit of a hint when it reveals its own quarterly numbers in February, but for now speculation is running rampant.

The iPhone X had a bit of a delayed launched compared to the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, which I was actually thankful for. That window, from the September reveal date to the November launch date gave me time to plan ahead a bit more than I typically get every year. (Two weeks isn't very long.) It meant I could take my time with trade-ins and so on. No rushing needed.

Still, installment plans from the wireless carriers help quite a bit. Phones might be getting more expensive, but at least we don't have to fork over a huge lump sum right up front -- unless you want to, of course, to help reduce that monthly cost. Seeing a phone that costs $1,000, but you only have to pay $40 per month isn't too bad.

It isn't the perfect situation, but it's not the worst, either.

This year is going to be an interesting one, as far as prices go. I can't help but wonder if Samsung, and other companies, try to charge more for their devices this year. And, if they do, how much of an impact that will have moving forward.

But that all got me thinking about budgeting for your tech purchases. We all know that devices get launched on a regular basis, usually with yearly refreshes, so I'm wondering how far ahead you plan to prepare for those device purchases.

Do you set a budget, so that you only pay a certain amount in the year for devices? Or is it a hard limit on the number of gadgets you buy? Are you refusing to pay $1,000 or more for a smartphone? Let me know!

Verizon reportedly drops plans to sell Huawei phones, including Mate 10 Pro

Huawei Mate 10 Pro hands-on review

Looks like AT&T may not be the only carrier to ditch its plans to sell Huawei phones in the US.

Verizon has abandoned its plans to sell phones made by Huawei, including the Mate 10 Pro. Sources speaking to Bloomberg say that Verizon faced pressure from the US government to drop those plans.

Neither Huawei nor Verizon have commented on this report.

Huawei is a major mobile company in many parts of the globe, but it hasn't been able to gain much traction in the US. That's because while Huawei has been selling unlocked phones in the US for awhile now, most US consumers still buy their phones from carriers.

Getting its phones onto AT&T and Verizon's shelves would've given Huawei a huge chance to boost its market share in the US, especially since AT&T and Verizon are the two largest carriers in the US. However, US government concerns about Chinese spying appear to have thwarted Huawei's hopes for growth.

Google credits AI for stopping more rogue Android apps in 2017

Google likes to boast of its ability to shut down Android malware, and it apparently has good reason to brag about 2017. The company took down over 700,000 apps that violated Play Stores policies last year (a 70 percent increase over 2016), and it was considerably better at pulling rogue apps in time to avoid infections. Thanks to a slew of new machine learning techniques, it caught 99 percent of apps with "abusive contents" before anyone had installed them.

LG G6 getting three new colors

LG G6 new colors Moroccan Blue, Lavender Violet, Raspberry Rose

LG is starting 2018 by adding some color to its G6 flagship.

The LG G6 will soon be available in Moroccan Blue, Lavender Violet, and Raspberry Rose. These color options will launch first in Korea in February 2018 and will expand to other "key markets".

The LG Q6 is getting some new colors, too. LG says that the Q6 will be offered in Moroccan Blue and Lavender Violet, which will also roll out to Korea first in February 2018 followed by releases in other markets.

Having more color options when buying a smartphone is always a good thing, and it's especially nice to see something different from the black, gold, and silver colors that we typically see smartphones launch with nowadays.

Google closes $1.1 billion HTC deal

Google logo Pixel

After striking a $1.1 billion deal back in September, Google has officially closed its acquisition from HTC.

Google says that its deal with HTC is now done and that means that HTC employees will be joining Google. This includes the same team of HTC employees that Google worked with on the Pixel and Pixel 2 smartphones.

With the close of this deal, Google says that Taipei will become the largest Google engineering site in the Asia Pacific region.

HTC has said that while it is losing some of its smartphone talent to Google, it's not exiting the smartphone business. The company previously said that this Google deal "supports HTC's continued branded smartphone strategy" and will help streamline HTC's product portfolio for better operational efficiency and financial flexibility. HTC says that it has "best-in-class engineering talent" working on its next flagship phone.

Apple might delay iOS interface revamp to focus on stability

If you hadn't noticed, iOS 11 has had more than its fair share of bugs. And that's apparently been worrisome enough to prompt a rethink of how the company approaches iOS 12. Axios sources have said that Apple is pushing some major iOS feature updates into 2019 to focus this year's upgrades on "performance and quality issues." Reportedly, Apple is delaying refreshes of the home screen interface, CarPlay, core apps and photography in favor of quality and responsiveness. There will be significant improvements in 2018, the insiders said -- they'll just focus on less dramatic areas like augmented reality, health and parental controls.

Snapchat takes Bitmoji deluxe with hundreds of new customization options

Snapchat just announced a new feature called Bitmoji Deluxe, adding hundreds more options to customize your avatar, including new skin tones, hairstyles, eye and hair colors, facial features, and accessories.

On Bitmoji Deluxe, you can snap a selfie and use it as a reference to design your avatar. When you select a particular eyebrow style, for example, the app will preview it directly on your avatar in the builder. If you prefer your current avatar, the Bitmoji classic and Bitstrip styles will still be available.

Once the deluxe feature is live, you can access the tool via settings in the Bitmoji app, and tap on “change avatar style.” You can also do this in Snapchat by tapping “edit Bitmoji,” which will take you over to the Bitmoji...

Verizon follows AT&T in dropping Huawei smartphones

Verizon is the latest carrier to drop its plans to sell phones from Chinese handset maker Huawei, according to sources cited in Bloomberg. The move follows a similar decision from AT&T earlier this month, supposedly prompted by pressure from the US government over security concerns. The government is also pressing Verizon to end any collaboration with Huawei on standards for a 5G network.

Google completes its $1.1 billion HTC deal

Google's billion-dollar deal to acquire a part of HTC (along with a non-exclusive license for its intellectual property) is done. The two companies announced its completion tonight, and the details appear to be the same as originally announced. While the team behind the Pixel phones is joining Google, HTC says it will continue to make mobile devices under its own brand name while using Vive products to compete in VR. It won't stop there either, as the company says it will pursue innovations in AR, AI and IoT technology.

In a blog post, Google hardware SVP Rick Osterloh said: "Today, we start digging in with our new teammates, guided by the mission to create radically helpful experiences for people around the world, by combining the best of Google's AI, software and hardware."
