Nexus could use a rebranding

Nexus 6P

I’m not a big fan of change. I never have been. However, I’ve gotten to a place in life that when changes happen, I’m pretty quick at adapting to them in one way or another – but usually not until after I’ve undergone a brief period of shock and disbelief (which usually amounts to a simple “What?” and “No,” before coming to terms with whatever the change is).

Google loans 360-degree cameras to islands that used sheep to make maps

Earlier this summer, a tourism advocate named Durita Dahl Andreassen made a plea to Google. In a blog post, Andreassen explained how she'd spent the last few months using sheep equipped with 360-degree cameras to capture images of the Faroe Islands — an isolated North Atlantic archipelago that had yet to be documented by Google Street View. "My sheep are great for capturing the tracks and trails of the Faroe Islands," wrote Andreassen, who works for the Faroe Islands' tourism board, "but in order to cover the big sweeping Faroese roads and the whole of the breathtaking landscape, we need Google to come and map them."

"Even sheep can contribute to Street View"

Nubia's 'bezel-less' Z11 smartphone launches worldwide

You probably still don't know a lot about the Nubia smartphone brand if you live outside of China, but the company is bent on changing that: it's launching its latest flagship, the Z11, worldwide. The phone touts a "bezel-less" design with a 81 percent screen-to-body ratio, which both gives it a seamless effect and makes its 5.5-inch, 1080p display easier to manage in your hand. Nubia is definitely playing up the looks -- it's offering a posh black gold version (above) on top of more pedestrian gray and silver variants.

What to expect from Apple's 'See You' iPhone event

It's that time of year again. It's the end of summer, and Apple is once again on the cusp of introducing a new iPhone. Only this year, there's a different buzz. There's been talk of Cupertino playing it relatively safe with a new smartphone for the second year in a row or even taking away the time-honored headphone jack. What's the deal with that? And of course, this is likely just the tip of the iceberg. The Apple Watch is getting long in the tooth, new versions of iOS and macOS are nearly ready... and as many will tell you, large swaths of Apple's iPad and Mac lineups are gathering dust. But just what are you going to see when Tim Cook and company take the stage? We've rounded up some of the more plausible leaks, rumors and educated guesses to help set expectations for Apple's September 7th media extravaganza.

Lenovo's two new tablets include a lower-cost Surface Pro rival

Lenovo's hoopla at IFA may be focusing on its creative-minded Yoga Book, but there are two new bread-and-butter tablets that are worth your attention, too. The 12.2-inch Miix 510 is a Surface Pro-alike for people who want a reasonably speedy 2-in-1 Windows tablet, but aren't willing to pay a premium. It sports a lower-resolution display than the Miix 700 (1,920 x 1,200) and is both heavier (1.9 pounds without the keyboard attached) and thicker (0.39 inches), but it promises to be more powerful. You can have up to a 6th-generation Core i7 processor inside rather than a Core M, and up to a 1TB SSD -- if it weren't for the maximum 8GB of RAM and 7.5 hours of battery life, the new Miix could easily go toe-to-toe with Microsoft's current flagship slate. There's even optional LTE data, which has been sorely missing on the Surface Pro line.

Lenovo's Yoga Book is part tablet, part sketch pad

Let's face it: tablets are on the brink of death, and it's really difficult to get excited about a new slate these days. And even though tablet-laptop hybrids are taking off, that market is cornered by Surfaces and iPad Pros. So I wasn't prepared to be as thrilled as I was by Lenovo's latest offering. The Yoga Book, based on my experience with a preview unit, is not merely a mimicry of Microsoft's Surface Book; it's got impressively innovative features and a well-thought out interface that make it a solid hybrid in its own right.

Motorola's new Moto Z Play is cheaper, but not compromised

Well, that was fast. It's been just over a month since the Moto Z and Moto Z Force landed in the US and Motorola has already cooked up another phone to go with them. The new Moto Z Play is the last and least expensive member of the Moto Z Family, and you'll be able to nab one for yourself in the US starting on September 8. Sounds all well and good, but here's the big question: how does Motorola's modular vision scale down to more modest smartphones? Pretty well, actually.

Instagram gets pinch-to-zoom on iOS, Android update in tow

The feature you didn't know you wanted for Instagram has finally arrived: pinch-to-zoom. Surprised it wasn't already there? Don't be. Originally, Instagram didn't support large enough images to warrant enlarging -- but last year, that changed last year when the company bumped its default image size up to 1080 x 1080. Now, we're seeing the fruits of that upgrade: starting today, iOS users can pinch and zoom any image or video in their feed. On Android? Sit tight. Instagram says the update will roll out to additional platforms in a few weeks.

Samsung delays Galaxy Note 7 shipments over quality tests

If you were planning to buy a Galaxy Note 7, you might not want to count on getting it quickly. Samsung tells Reuters that it's delaying shipments of its latest smartphone as it conducts "additional tests" to verify "product quality." It's not saying what it's worried about, but there have been reports of the phone's battery exploding while it charges. Samsung might be checking to see whether or not the battery fires are the result of systemic flaws, or just a handful of isolated incidents.

Tile's slimmest Bluetooth tracker won't bulk up your wallet

Tile, which raised over a million dollars on Kickstarter over three years ago, is a popular Bluetooth tracker that helps you find your missing stuff. Aside from Bluetooth, it also uses a crowd-finding feature where other Tile app users can ping you the whereabouts of a Tile that's out of Bluetooth range. There was an update last year to Tile 2.0, which has a louder alarm plus it'll help find your phone as well. The problem with the existing Tile, however, is that it's a little chunky. That's why Tile has now introduced the Tile Slim, a much thinner version of the tracker that'll fit more comfortably in tight spots like wallets and passport holders. But that's not all. Tile has also announced a new initiative that just might bring Tile's location-finding smarts to anything and everything.

Qualcomm's new flagship chip loads apps 10 percent faster

Qualcomm has unveiled more details about its flagship Snapdragon 821 processor that we first saw in July. It's intended to fill the gap until a future next-gen chip comes along, so performance improvements over the Snapdragon 820 (used in Samsung's Galaxy Note 7) are decent, but not amazing. CPU performance is better across the board, with boot times, app loading and overall performance up to 10 percent faster.

Apple launches 2TB iCloud storage for $20 a month

Apple has introduced a way to stop that annoying "full storage" iCloud message from popping up in the near future: a new tier that offers 2TB of space. The company has updated its iCloud pricing list ahead of its September event to include the new option, and it will cost you $20 a month in the US. 9to5mac, which first reported on the new tier, noted that there are rumors swirling around that Cupertino is launching a 256GB iPhone 7 during the event. If that's true and you decide to get both, then you won't have to worry about deleting photos and videos for quite sometime. The bigger storage option would also allow you to save more folders on iCloud when macOS Sierra comes out.

Google's new In Apps search lets you look through your Android apps for information

Android users have a new way to look for information stored inside their smartphone apps, with a new Google search feature appropriately titled "In Apps." The new feature, announced tonight, appears as an option inside Android's Google app, and allows you to search for — among other things — contacts, photos, and videos across apps like Gmail, Spotify, and YouTube.

In Apps searches work offline, meaning you won't need a data connection to sift through your software for that address you forgot, and you'll be able to tweak settings so that certain apps don't appear in the search results. Google says it will be adding support for more apps in the future, letting users look for information with keywords in Facebook Messenger, LinkedIn, and...
