OnePlus 5's jelly scrolling possibly caused by upside-down screen

Some OnePlus 5 owners have reported encountering a strange "jelly-like" scrolling effect over the past few days since the phone was released. According to their posts on Reddit and other social networks, the text and images on their screen expand and shrink as they swipe in the opposite direction. The issue became big enough for the phonemaker to make a formal statement, wherein it said that the "subtle visual effect" when scrolling is totally natural. In other words, you can't expect a fix for it, since it's technically not a defect. But why does the OnePlus 5 exhibit the behavior in the first place? We might not get an answer out of OnePlus, but based on XDA Developers' investigation, it's because the device's screen was apparently mounted upside down.

The Moto X4 may be the first non-Google phone to get Project Fi

There's only been one problem with Project Fi's well-received phone carrier network: too few phones. Until now, the only devices that work with it have been Google's own Nexus and Pixel handsets. It looks like that's about to change, though. Project Fi teased a release on Twitter, announcing "a new Fi-compatible device at a mid-tier price from one of our partners later this year." VentureBeat reports this device will be Lenovo's Moto X4, which will likely become the very first non-Google phone on the Google Fi system.

This deal is good on the unlocked HTC U11, which is compatible with AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon’s networks. It applies to all four colors of the U11, including the new Solar Red model. Do note, though, that the Solar Red model is a pre-order that’ll start shipping in July 2017.

Moto X4 rumored to be upcoming Project Fi 'mid-tier price' smartphone

Motorola event large

Remember yesterday when Google teased that a new Project Fi-compatible phone with a “mid-tier price” would be launching later this year? Well today a new report claims to have more info on which device Google was referring to.

Project Fi’s upcoming “mid-tier price” phone is the Moto X4 from Motorola, according to a report from VentureBeat. The device is expected to launch in Q4 2017, and while there aren’t a ton of spec details available, a leaked Motorola presentation suggests that the phone will have a 5.2-inch 1920x1080 display, “3D Glass”, and a feature called “SmartCam”.

The arrival of the Moto X4 on Project Fi would be notable for a few reasons. Not only would it be the addition of a new phone that’s officially supported on Project Fi, but it’d likely be the first non-Nexus and non-Pixel phone to launch on Fi. Plus, its “mid-tier price” means that Fi would once again have a more affordable device available for customers, following the discontinuation of the Nexus 5X.

While the Moto Z line seems to have taken over as Motorola’s flagship series, the impending arrival of a new Moto X phone is still something to look forward to, especially with the news that the X4 could be a new Project Fi handset. What do you want to see from the Moto X4?

Do you try to avoid phone calls?

iPhone 7

Yesterday, as you probably heard on more than a few occasions, was the tenth anniversary of the iPhone. Way back in 2007 Apple officially launched its first smartphone, and the industry, and a lot of facets of culture itself, changed forever. We've come a long way since the iPhone arrived on the scene. We've seen some companies come and go, other giants fade out entirely, and smaller companies rise up from out of nowhere to offer competitive handsets at even more competitive price points.

The smartphone market continues to advance in strides, due in part because people appear to be holding onto their phones for longer periods of time, so trying to convince people to upgrade year after year is a tougher sell. For fans of smartphones, and especially those who like to try out everything they can get their hands on, that's a winning strategy.

Yesterday night I decided to watch a brief snippet of Steve Jobs announcing the original iPhone.

First, it was just awesome to watch Jobs on stage again. He was such a great presenter. And watching him drop "subtle" hints back then, which are now so obvious, was kind of hilarious. I had forgotten that he had initially teased three different products, with a widescreen iPod with touch controls, a revolutionized phone, and a more powerful tool to browse the internet. The audience clapped each time, obviously excited to see more products, and then lost it when Jobs made it obvious he was talking about one product.

What we'd all know as the iPhone.

One thing that caught my attention while rewatching that keynote was just how adamant Jobs was on changing the phone itself. Revolutionizing the phone, making it better. But all I can remember from that time period was how pesky text messages were, and the fact they weren't unlimited. But talking on the phone was still happening, especially since Bluetooth was getting off the ground and people in suits could rock those awesome on-ear microphones.

It stood out to me because of all the things Apple has done over the years, especially with the introduction of the iPhone, I think they actually killed the phone, at least on a broad spectrum. Speaking personally, I loathe talking on the phone -- and it's something I used to do all the time without a second thought. But now? Anyone that I actively talk to on a regular basis knows that if they call me, it better be an emergency. I ignore 90% of the phone calls I get. The only time I ever call my mom is on Mother's Day and on her birthday. Otherwise: Texting.

Jobs wanted to make the phone better, but I think he actually ushered in its death knell. Phones have become supercomputers, with an endless array of apps and services, many of which make the phone part of our smartphones obsolete.

I can't say that the phone, or talking on the phone, is completely dead, though. I still see people talking on their device, whatever it might be, all the time when I go out. I still have to sit on conference calls from time-to-time. The phone call will probably never completely die out, even as companies try to get video calling into the spotlight. But it has definitely been repositioned into the backseat.

What about you? How often do you make phone calls, and is it your preferred way of communicating? Or, like me, do you hate talking on the phone? If you don't talk on the phone, what's your primary way of getting in touch with people? Let me know!

LG gifts Comcast a $180 battery champ for its mobile network

LG's new Android phone called X charge for Comcast's Xfinity Mobile service isn't a flagship by any means. Its specs won't be able to compete with your iPhone 7s and Samsung Galaxy S8s, but it has one particular feature that stands out: its massive 4,500mAh battery that's 1,000mAh bigger than the ones inside the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus and the notorious Galaxy Note 7. LG says it can carry enough power to last all weekend -- if the X charge's battery isn't a dud like the Note 7's, that may very well be true. The S8 Plus lasted two days on a single charge when we reviewed it.

OnePlus responds to complaints of jelly-like scrolling on some OnePlus 5 units

OnePlus 5 hands-on video

The OnePlus 5 is now making its way into the hands of early buyers, and some folks are noticing a sort of jelly-like effect when scrolling through apps on the device. Today OnePlus responded to the issue.

In a statement to The Verge, OnePlus explained that it has received feedback from “a small number” of OnePlus 5 owners who say they’ve noticed a visual effect when scrolling. “This is natural and there’s no variance in screens between devices,” OnePlus says.

The company added that the components used in the OnePlus 5 are the same level of quality as those in its other devices.

It’s good that OnePlus has responded to this issue, but those who are affected by this OnePlus 5 jelly-like scrolling likely aren’t going to be thrilled with the statement. Because OnePlus says that the visual effect is natural, these OP5 owners will likely either have to learn to live with the scrolling effect or return their device. OnePlus takes returns within 15 calendar days of delivery, so early adopters of the OnePlus 5 are still within this window.

Do you have a OnePlus 5 that’s affected with this jelly-like scrolling issue?

Instagram rolling out filters for offensive comments and spam

Instagram Android app icon

Instagram can be a good place to share your favorite photos and videos with others, but like just about any other social network, sometimes nasty comments are left on posts. Today Instagram announced how it’s fighting those comments.

First up, Instagram is adding a “Hide Offensive Comments” feature. A report from Wired notes that this system is powered by AI that analyzes comments on factors like the text itself, the commenter’s history, and the commenter’s relationship to the poster. If a comment is deemed to be offensive, it’ll be hidden to everyone but the commenter.

This Hide Offensive Comments feature will be automatically enabled for everyone. If for some reason you’d like to turn it off, you can do so in the Comments section of your Instagram settings.

Instagram also notes that its Hide Offensive Comments feature will be available in English first, but that more languages will be added over time.

Also rolling out is a spam filter. This filter will look for obvious spam in your comments sections and block it from both posts and live videos. The spam filter is powered by machine learning and will remove spam written in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, French, German, Russian, Japanese, and Chinese.

LG X Charge launching at Xfinity Mobile with 4500mAh battery in tow

LG X Charge Xfinity Mobile official

LG’s X series of smartphones is expanding today with a new offering for Comcast’s Xfinity Mobile service.

The LG X Charge will launch on Xfinity Mobile tomorrow, June 30th. The X Charge’s highlight feature is its battery, which is 4500mAh and will last “all weekend” according to LG.

Other features of the LG X Charge include Android 7.0 running on a 5.5-inch HD display, 13-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front cameras (each with its own flash), 16GB of storage, and a microSD slot. Also concluded is an octa-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and 4G LTE connectivity.

While the LG X Charge’s spec list isn’t the most high-end around, it does have a beefy battery that should last for awhile on a single charge thanks to the X Charge’s modest spec list. Plus, it’s good to see that Xfinity Mobile is expanding its device selection, especially since most of the service’s other phones are fairly pricey.

There’s no word yet on how much the LG X Charge will cost, but considering its specs, it shouldn’t be too hard on buyers’ wallets. Full pricing info should be revealed tomorrow when the X Charge becomes available.

I don't regret being an iPhone early adopter

Do you remember where you were when Steve Jobs first introduced the iPhone, more than 10 years ago? It's a pretty nerdy thing to admit, but I do. I spent the day glued to my computer, at my desk -- theoretically hard at work. But I was actually devouring Engadget's liveblog, after which I watched and re-watched video of the event so I could see the mythical device in action. And then I spent the next 12 months waiting for my Verizon contract to expire, hating my Moto RAZR the entire freaking time. (Yes, I wasn't a day-one adopter, but I definitely stopped in an AT&T store to play with their demo phones.)

The first iPhone wasn't a world-beater in terms of sales, and many have pointed out that it was the classic "first-gen" Apple product. It lacked important features like 3G connectivity and any third-party apps, you had to hook it up to iTunes to activate it and it was wildly expensive -- $500 for a paltry 4GB of storage (or $600 for 8GB), with a two-year contract.

None of that mattered to me, and that's in large part due to Jobs' presentation, one that's widely considered the best he ever gave. I'd agree with that assessment, because he so clearly outlined the benefits of the iPhone over the phones that most consumers (including me) were using. Some of my colleagues fondly remember the Windows Mobile devices they used before the iPhone and noted how they waited a few years for Apple to fix those first-gen issues, before getting on board.

The 'Final Fantasy XV' mobile game is a mess, but at least it's free

Mobile games can make a ton of money, with titles like Clash of Clans making billions of dollars for their respective developers. Square Enix has been active in mobile gaming with titles based on its own popular role-playing games, with original free-to-play titles like Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius and premium ports of older titles like Final Fantasy IX. Now, the veteran publisher has just released another free-to-play game to Android and iOS, titled Final Fantasy XV: A New Empire. Square Enix may hope to bring new fans to the series it's based on while also encouraging fans of the console game to give it a go. It's just too bad the game is (so far) kind of an inscrutable mess.

PBS will remain on the air in rural areas thanks to T-Mobile

PBS announced today that T-Mobile has agreed to foot the bill for public broadcasting's translators to move to new frequencies, which they'll have to do in order to stay on the air after the FCC's incentive auction. T-Mobile bid $8 billion and received 45 percent of the low-band spectrum auctioned off by the FCC earlier this year. The TV channels operating on the sold-off spectrum now have to move to lower channels, share with other networks or shut down. Because the FCC isn't providing funding for translators to be repackaged, 38 million Americans, largely in rural areas, were at risk of losing access to PBS if those broadcast facilities shut down. T-Mobile's agreement to pay for the repackaging costs will keep PBS on the air in those areas.

Google says Project Fi getting new 'mid-tier price' phone later this year

Project Fi is only officially compatible with a handful of phones, and the only ones that are currently available for purchase are the Pixel and Pixel XL. That’ll change soon.

The news that an affordable Fi-compatible phone is on the way is good to hear, and it’ll be interesting to see exactly which device it is.

Which iPhone model has been your favorite so far?

Apple iPhone

You've probably seen that today marks the 10th anniversary of the iPhone. Sometimes it can be hard to fathom that it's already been a decade since the original model launched, but then we look back at all the models of Apple's smartphone that have seen the light of day since, and, especially, how many competing products have made it out into the world. Smartphones existed before the iPhone, but it's impossible to ignore the impact that Apple has had on the market as a whole.

A moment of reflection: When the first iPhone launched I had just got out of selling phones, and I had actually just left AT&T's network. Unfortunately it had been long enough that getting back on the Big Blue network just wasn't a possibility --thanks contracts!-- so I had to live vicariously through a friend of mine. But, if I'm being honest, I don't think I was completely sold on the idea to start.

I was a huge fan of Windows Mobile back in the day, and getting me to switch was going to take a lot more than just an Apple brand on the back of a phone. But then my buddy let me play with the phone while we were waiting for a movie to start. It was that capacitive touchscreen that won me over. Pinch-to-zoom was too good to ignore, and it was pretty obvious, even right out of the gate, that both the feature and the touchscreen technology was going to be the future.

It would take me a bit longer to be convinced that a software keyboard was better than a hardware keyboard, though.

My first iPhone wasn't the original, or even the iPhone 3G -- it was the iPhone 3GS. I loved that phone, and it was great and all that, but my time with it wouldn't last. I found my way over to Android (again) and I'd be there for a while. I eventually found my way back to the Apple ecosystem with the iPhone 4S. I've left and returned, departed and came back, more times than I can count.

But my favorite iPhone up to this point, based entirely on the look of the hardware, is the iPhone 5.

The iPhone has come a long way over the years, both in hardware and its software. Some people might say it hasn't come far enough, and that it's still missing key elements, and in some areas I'd agree. For others though, the iPhone has been their go-to device that has fit the bill for what they need. Both camps aren't wrong. It all comes down to what you like using.

In light of the 10th anniversary I wanted to ask you which iPhone model was your first, and if you've used more than one variant over the years, which one has been your favorite? And, just because I'm curious, which iPhone model did you try and ultimately decide Apple's hardware/software combo wasn't for you? Let me know!

Instagram now uses AI to block offensive comments

Instagram is introducing an enhanced comment filter today meant to wipe out nasty remarks using AI. The app first began offering a comment filter last September, but it was a very simple approach: Instagram would only remove comments that contained words and phrases it had specifically identified as offensive. (Users could also add their own custom banned phrases.)

Now, the system is getting a lot smarter. It uses machine learning to identify comments that seem offensive, giving the system some ability to take into account the reply’s context, potentially catching more bad comments and cutting down on false positives at the same time. The 'Futurama' crew returns today in a new mobile game

Good news, everyone: after no small amount of hype, you can revisit the Futurama universe on your phone. Jam City's TinyCo has released Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow for free on both Android and iOS. It's clearly another not-so-subtle attempt to cash in on a much-loved TV series, but this title promises to do more than trade on a familiar name. It has a relatively rich story created by Matt Groening, David X. Cohen and a writing team from the show, and the original show cast is on tap for dialogue. However, the most intriguing part may be its extremely varied gameplay -- it's more ambitious than many console or PC titles in some ways, even if it's not necessarily as deep.

Meet the small 360 camera module that will fit into phones

You're probably not aware of this, but a Chinese company dubbed ProTruly has already released the world's first two smartphones with a built-in 360 camera last December. Don't worry if you missed the news, because chances are you'd be put off by the devices' sheer bulkiness, but according to HT Optical, this may no longer be the case with the next release. At MWC Shanghai, I came across this Wuhan-based company which happened to be the 360 camera module supplier of not just ProTruly, but also of Xiaomi for its recent Mi Sphere Camera.

Signal tests changes to how users verify secure contacts

Last November, Signal introduced a few changes to how it manages its safety numbers -- the unique code given to each conversation you have on the app. Safety numbers can change because someone gets a new phone and reinstalled the app or because the conversation has been compromised. Typically, whenever that code changed, those in the conversation had to manually approve the new safety number before sending or receiving any additional messages.

Dummy iPhone 8 with new design reportedly shown on video

Rumors have suggested that Apple may be planning a significant design change for the iPhone 8, and today we may be getting a peek at that new design.

A new video from @OnLeaks and Tiger Mobiles claims to show off a CNC mockup of the iPhone 8, which is based off of the alleged factory CAD info that @OnLeaks got two months ago. The basic design of this iPhone 8 isn’t too far off from the iPhone 7, featuring a slab design and rounded corners, but the rest of this design is a significant departure from previous iPhones.

On the front of the phone, we can see bezels that’ve been slimmed down dramatically so that the front is almost entirely display. The earpiece, camera, and sensors are part of a small protrusion sticking out on the top of the display, similar to the front-facing camera on the Essential Phone. Other than that, the front of this device is all screen.

iPhone 8 design leak front

Around back we can see a dual camera setup like the iPhone 7 Plus had, but these cameras are arranged vertically rather than horizontally like on the 7 Plus. Additionally, the rear camera flash is positioned between the two cameras rather than to the right of them like on the iPhone 7 Plus.

The dimensions of this alleged iPhone 8 are 71mm wide, 143.5mm long, and 7.5mm thick. To compare, the iPhone 7 is 67.1mm wide, 138.3mm long, and 7.1mm thick.

Past rumors have suggested that Apple is planning to reduce the bezels on the iPhone 8 so that it can fit an iPhone 7 Plus-sized display (around 5.5 inches) in the body size of the iPhone 7 (which has a 4.7-inch screen). Because Apple is slimming the bezels so much, it’s got to put the home button somewhere, and it’s been rumored that Apple is trying to integrate the bottom into the display using software like on the Galaxy S8.

iPhone 8 design leak rear

While still very much a rumor, this iPhone 8 would bring Apple’s smartphone in line design-wise with some new Android phones like the Galaxy S8, G6, and Essential Phone. The iPhone has caught some flak for its large top and bottom bezels in recent years, so this leaked design would be a welcome change if it becomes reality. Apple is reportedly also working on upgraded versions of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus for this year, though, so not all of Apple’s new iPhones for 2017 will get this leaked design.

What do you think of this rumored iPhone 8 design?

Would big bezels on the next Pixel be a deal breaker?

Google Pixel and LG G6

One of the big smartphone trends in 2017 is shrinking bezels. As it turns out, shaving bezel space off the sides of a device to expand the screen ends up making a lot of sense. The “phablet” fad that started in 2011 with the original Note “wasn’t a phase, Mom,” and now we’re left with demand for larger screens. However, while larger screens have gained popularity, there’s still one issue that needs to be addressed: people’s hands don’t magically get bigger, so by shrinking the bezels and increasing the screen size the end result is the best of both worlds.

We’ve seen it with the LG G6 and the Galaxy S8; other flagship releases like the HTC U 11 and the OnePlus 5 ended up keeping their bezels. Considering both HTC and OnePlus commented on why they didn’t go for bezel-less displays, it’s safe to assume that the consumer demand for bezel-less displays already exists on a grand scale.

What I want to know is: What does this mean for the Google Pixel?

Reception for the Pixel has been so-so. There's a bitter undertone regarding the Pixel by enthusiasts considering the Nexus line was sacrificed for it, but I think Google’s rigorous marketing for the Pixel boosted its image to the general consumer. The phone is pricey, but it has a great camera, vanilla Android, and Google’s branding. However, the market is more aggressively competitive than ever before with cheaper phones and an abundance of recognizable brands. Despite those hurdles, more people seem to know about the Pixel in the 8 months since its release than in the 5 years the Nexus line was in production.

I believe there are two things needed to make the next generation Pixel a big hit: the inclusion of a headphone jack (which was still included in last year’s model, but appears to be at risk to lose it this year) and a bezel-less display.

Personally, I don’t care much about bezels. I’ve been testing a lot of phones out lately that range from bezel-less to wide margins, and neither design particularly strikes me as being better than the other through everyday use; they each have their pros and cons. However, I do think that I’m in the minority with that opinion. Smaller bezels have quickly become a popular design aspect of modern smartphones, and I think that many consumers would take that into consideration, especially when you have smartphones with larger bezels on display next to smartphones with smaller bezels. Admittedly, when I do a side-by-side comparison of smartphones with different bezel sizes, the one with smaller bezels does tend to look better.

It’s still uncertain exactly what the next Pixel will look like, or who will make it. HTC was behind the design of the 1st generation Pixel. There have been leaks of certain system files that indicate the next Pixel may be made by HTC as well – which also indicate that the next Pixel may look similar to the HTC U 11 flagship (which featured both larger bezels and no headphone jack). I do hope that these rumors aren’t true. Between the Pixel’s premium price tag and unseasoned reputation, going against the grain seems like a risky endeavor if Google chooses that route.

Readers, what are your thoughts on the next generation Pixel? Do you think it absolutely needs to have smaller bezels (and a headphone jack) to continue gaining traction, or is Google’s brand enough to carry it through if not? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Apple releases iOS 10.3.3 beta 5 update

iPhone 7 Plus hands-on video review

When it comes to iOS beta releases, most of the focus nowadays is on iOS 11, which just got its second developer update and first public beta. Apple is also busy beta testing iOS 10.3.3, though, and today that version got a new beta release.

Apple has released iOS 10.3.3 beta 5 to registered developers. If that’s you, then you should be able to grab the update by going to Apple’s Developer Center or by going to Settings > General > Software Update on your iOS device.

There doesn’t appear to be a public beta update available for iOS 10.3.3 beta 5 quite yet, but that should change in the next day or two.

There haven’t been any major new features found in any of the iOS 10.3.3 betas that’ve been released to date, suggesting that this update is focused on bug fixes and performance improvements. That may now sound super exciting, but we do still have iOS 11 to look forward to, which will bring lots of new features with it when it launches to the public this fall.

Google Photos' AI-powered sharing is now available

Google is making good on its promise of AI-assisted photo sharing. A Google Photos upgrade arriving this week uses machine learning to suggest pictures based on both your own sharing habits, the people in the photos, and whether or not they're part of a "meaningful moment," such as a party or a wedding. You might not have to remember to share photos of your best friend when you get home from a big weekend shindig. You can customize who receives the photos, of course, and fellow Google Photos users can get reminders to add their photos to the relevant album.

Revamped Twitch app streams live from your phone

As useful as the Twitch mobile app can be, it still falls short of what you're used to on the desktop, especially if you're a broadcaster. Would you believe that you have to switch apps just to stream live? Thankfully, it's shrinking that gap today. It's starting to roll out a Twitch app overhaul that adds some of the features you take for granted while refining the interface. For creators, the biggest deal is simply direct mobile streaming -- you can livestream to your channel without any go-between software. While phone-based broadcasting was certainly possible before, this could easily lead to more IRL streams from your favorite streamers.

Google Photos gaining Suggested Sharing and Shared Libraries features

Google Photos Suggested Sharing

Heads up, Google Photos users, because some new features are now coming your way.

Google is now rolling out Suggested Sharing and Shared Libraries features in Google Photos. First up, the Sharing tab will show images that’ve been shared with you and that you’ve shared with others. There will also be suggestions of images that Google Photos thinks you may want to share with people.

Google explains that Photos recognizes meaningful events, selects what it thinks are the best photos that you took, and then suggests who might want to see the photos. You can review and add or delete images before sharing. Also, your friends and family that use Google Photos can add their photos to your shared album, and you’ll get a notification when images are added.

Google Photos Shared Libraries

Also rolling out today is Shared Libraries. To access this feature, open the slide-out menu in Google Photos and tap “Share your library”. You can then share your entire photo library with someone, just certain images, or photos starting from a certain date.

Once you’ve shared your photo library with someone, they’ll automatically receive a notification and be able to see new images that you take. The recipient can also automatically save all of your new shared photos or choose just to save photos of certain people.

Suggested Sharing and Shared Libraries are now rolling out on Android, iOS, and the web.
