Samsung is the latest tech titan to open an AI lab in Canada

If it wasn't already clear that Canada is becoming a hotbed for AI research, it is now: Samsung has opened an AI lab (shown below) at the Université de Montréal. The school's faculty and students (including long-time Samsung partner Prof. Yoshua Bengio) will collaborate with South Korean researchers on a slew of AI-related projects, including self-driving car technology, image recognition, translation and robots. While you may not see the first fruits of this lab for years, it underscores both Samsung's increasing dependence on AI and the tech industry's rapid shift to the north.

Apple acquires AI tech that seeks to understand your photos

At WWDC this year, Apple announced that iOS11 would have a new and improved Photos app, thanks in part to machine learning and AI. Apparently some of the advancements in this technology could be due to the acquisition of Regaind, a French startup that's known for its computer vision tech. According to TechCrunch, Apple may have purchased Regaind earlier this year.

Updated Nokia 3310 model adds 3G connectivity

Nokia 3310 3G connectivity

When HMD Global first introduced the Nokia 3310, it was a 2G-only device just like the original model that came out years ago. Fast-forward to today, though, and HMD has announced an upgraded model with a notable new feature.

The new Nokia 3310 looks identical to the model that was announced in February, but this one includes 3G connectivity. This model is also slightly larger and, likely due to the addition of 3G, its estimated battery life has dropped from 22.1 hours of talk time on the 2G model to 6.5 hours on the 3G version.

One other notable detail of the 3G-capable Nokia 3310 is that it’s got a slightly different operating system. It runs a Feature OS that HMD says was necessary with the addition of 3G support, but the software is said to be “as easy to use and navigate but with some cool new features.”

The 3G-capable Nokia 3310 will launch in mid-October for €69. Among the first regions to get the device will be Australia, but this 3310 is expected to roll out globally.

While 2G connectivity is in line with the original Nokia 3310, the addition of 3G support should help the device to feel a bit more modern. Obviously you’re not going to be doing anything too data intensive on the 3310’s 2.4-inch QVGA screen, but using apps like Facebook and Twitter will be much more bearable over 3G than it would be over 2G.

Does the addition of 3G make the Nokia 3310 tempting to you?

Facebook reportedly tests facial recognition to recover your account

Your face is getting a lot of attention lately. The iPhone X's Face ID is a recent example, as is Android Pay's reportedly upcoming facial authentication for loyalty programs. Airports may soon use the tech to help streamline boarding and security lines, though there are still privacy concerns over the implementation. Still, that hasn't deterred Facebook from testing "a facial recognition feature to help secure your account," according to a tweet from TheNextWeb's Matt Navarra.

Should Sony keep the headphone jack in its upcoming flagship?

Sony Xperia

Sony's smartphones, while perhaps not grabbing as much of the market's attention as other manufacturers' devices, have traditionally been pretty great handsets. At least on the hardware level. The cameras have been solid, the hardware worthwhile, and the company has managed to check off plenty of must-have boxes for customers over the years. For some folks, Sony is the perfect choice and the company they keep going back to.

Back when Sony was selling phones under the Sony Ericsson brand, I was a pretty big fan of the creations they came up with. They had phones that spun around to reveal the number pad, and handsets that were "designed for music," thanks to the Walkman brand tagging along. They were pretty cool devices, but, since then, I've sort of dropped off the wagon.

The hardware on Sony phones has never really pulled me away, but it's been the software. I'm not a huge fan of Sony's proprietary user interface, and if I basically have to re-skin and add apps to replace your own efforts --basically changing the entirety of the software experience-- I'm more likely to just use a different phone.

Plus, getting a Sony-branded smartphone from my carrier has been a nonstarter for many years.

One of the complaints lobbied against Sony recently is the fact it hasn't quite jumped on the same design bandwagon as the other companies out there. Basically, not adopting the bezel-less design. But it looks like the company has plans to fix that issue, because a major redesign for its hardware is on the way. And while the safe bet is that Sony will shrink the bezels, there is one hardware change I'm wondering if Sony will make with its next flagship: The 3.5mm headphone jack.

To some people, removing the headphone jack is simply user hostile and that's the end of the story. For others, it's not a big deal. For me, I just see it as an inevitability at this point, so I'm trying to just prepare accordingly (and hope wireless technology keeps improving). Some manufacturers have removed the port from their phones, and others haven't (yet).

I can't help but wonder what Sony will be doing with the headphone jack in its next flagship. Will Sony, a company that sells a range of wireless headphones, go the route that sees its phones remove the jack altogether? Or will the company's flagship keep it around for a little while longer?

The big question, to me, is whether or not you, as a customer, would consider a Sony-branded flagship smartphone if it didn't include the 3.5mm headphone jack. If Sony removes it, will this make their new device, even if it adopts the bezel-less design, looks great doing it, and offers all of the standard flagship features along with it, a no-go for you? Let me know!

Google Drive documents are now accessible in iOS 11's Files app

What good is the Apple Files app that came with iOS 11 anyway? Well, now that Google Drive plays nicely with it, the possibilities are... okay, they aren't endless, but you get the idea. Now that iOS has a central file library, it's nice that your items stored in the cloud are accessible there as well. Dropbox did something similar recently, too. It's nothing major, but folks who use Drive on their mobile devices a lot, or use an iPad as a PC replacement, will probably appreciate this quality of life improvement.

One year later: Duo rules, Allo drools

Google Allo and Duo

When Google announced their new messaging and video call applications, Allo and Duo, during Google I/O last year, I was ecstatic. Finally, here was the iMessage/FaceTime competitor we have been waiting for, available on both Android and iOS. It might take some convincing to get people to try Allo out – and might be a difficult sell, considering I also tried to convince people to use Hangouts before, too. But assuming this was the all-in-one messaging solution I thought it was going to be, it would be well worth it.

Except it kind of wasn’t.

It turned out that Allo and Duo weren’t much like iMessage and FaceTime at all. They had the same concept, but iMessage and FaceTime were far better integrated with each other than Allo and Duo were. Allo in particular suffered because it didn’t technically support SMS, which is a big setback here in the States where SMS is still the default method of texting. Allo also didn’t offer direct access to Duo from within the app, which fragmented what should have been a seamless experience.

Things have changed for the better over the course of a year, however. Google implemented direct access to Duo from Allo, and Allo now has a web interface that users can access through the Chrome browser on a PC. Unfortunately, Allo still doesn’t support SMS, and it’s not even clear if SMS will ever be integrated into the app. Although the improvements to Allo over the past year are welcome ones, for many it matters not without proper SMS support. Without SMS, Allo is just another frivolous messaging app to add to a likely extensive collection, therefore not worth the effort.

Duo, on the other hand, is my new go-to, even after switching back to iOS.

Truthfully, I’ve never been a big fan of video calls, but over the past year I’ve needed video calls more than ever for a multitude of reasons, so Duo arrived at the perfect time for me. Although many of my contacts have iOS and could use FaceTime, most of them also have Duo installed, and almost all of my Android contacts have it as well.

Aside from its availability across platforms, Duo has something else going for it: simplicity. Its no-frills approach to video calling is exactly the kind of straightforwardness I want out of a video call. You just tap, connect, and you’re set. Even its interface is as barebones as it gets. Now, I will admit I was not a fan of the “Knock Knock” feature at first, which allows the recipient to view live video before answering, but I’ve since embraced it by making horrible faces at people while waiting for my call to connect – assuming they even accept the call.

Connection with Duo isn’t immaculate; there has been a time or two where the voice or video cuts out temporarily, although I’ve yet to experience a true dropped call. Aside from that, it’s been a clean experience and has worked well no matter which phone I’m using it with.

That’s really all there is to say about it. It’s clean and works well. Because of its ease of use, how well it has worked for me, and how many people have readily adopted it as their go-to, Duo has become my main app for video calls and I’m happy that Google released it. I wish I could say the same for Allo, because I really did want to use it. Even after its debut, only a handful of people were willing to try it out with me. In the year since, only one other person still uses it with me, and that’s only when they’re traveling overseas. Most of the time it sits dormant in a folder, collecting virtual dust.

Now that I’m back on iOS it isn’t a big deal. I just use iMessage, which seamlessly transitions between iMessage or SMS, depending on who I am texting. But one day I will return to Android, as I often do, and iMessage won’t be an option. That’s never been enough to deter me, but it would have been nice if Allo had been as easy to use and carefree as Duo was. Fortunately, Allo isn’t the first nor the last messaging app to work on both Android and iOS, so there isn’t much of a loss.

Readers, what are your thoughts on Allo and Duo? Do you use either app as your go-to these days? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Verizon launching LG V30 on October 5th, Sprint LG V30+ coming on October 13th

LG V30 hands-on video angle

Now that the GSM carriers in the U.S. have announced their LG V30 launch plans, it’s time for the CDMA carriers to do the same.

Verizon says that it’ll launch the LG V30 on October 5th. No pricing information is available yet, but Verizon does say that it will not be offering pre-orders for the device.

Meanwhile, Sprint will begin selling the LG V30+ on October 13th. Pricing will be set at $0 down and $38 per month for a Sprint Flex lease, and Sprint says that new and existing customers can save $30 on the V30+ when they buy or upgrade online.

The one spec difference between the LG V30 and LG V30+ is that the V30+ comes with 128GB of built-in storage, double that of the standard V30. Both phones have a microSD slot, though, so you can add more storage if you need it.

Sprint touts that its LG V30+ will come with LG QuadPlay earbuds in the box. “They offer Quad Layer Speaker Technology to reproduce rich, accurate audio even at the extremes of both high and low frequencies,” Sprint says of these earbuds. “The premium fabric cable reduces tangling and minimizes the risk of introducing digital noise.”

For a limited time, new and upgrading Sprint customers can get a free LG V30+ on Sprint Flex lease when they buy one on lease. The free device will be covered by $38 monthly bill credits.

Finally, LG is offering a free Daydream View VR headset to customers that buy the LG V30 or V30+.

What to expect at Google's Pixel 2 event

Almost exactly a year ago, Google unveiled a host of new products, a veritable "Made by Google" ecosystem, as the company called it. The most notable devices were the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones and Google Home smart speaker, but Google also launched the Daydream View VR headset, a mesh-WiFi system and a 4K-capable Chromecast.

It was easily the company's biggest push yet into Google-branded hardware. But one year later, the Pixel and Pixel XL have been lapped by new devices from Samsung, Apple and LG, among others. We're due for a refresh, and we'll almost certainly get that in San Francisco on Wednesday, October 4th, when the company hosts its next big product launch. New phones are basically a shoo-in, but there's a bunch of other hardware that Google will likely show off. Here's what to expect.

Nokia remakes its remade 3310 with... 3G

As companies continue to pull open our wallets through the nefarious magic known as nostalgia, Nokia is back with another attempt to syphon some more disposable income from millennials and... whichever generation came before them. The re-reheated Nokia 3310 3G has, yes, 3G, which upgrades the 2.5G of the relaunched dumbphone, but still trails the LTE (4G) speeds we're used to. (Not that technical specs matter if you're interested in buying one.) It'll arrive with new Azure and Charcoal color options -- and silver buttons -- but that's pretty much the only other things that have notably changed.

Just kidding, we're talking about Amazon, which has enough money to roll out a wide range of products and see what sticks. With that, we're going dark again for a little while, but hope to bring you new episodes soon enough, possibly in a new format. Suggestions? Feedback? Feel free to email us or leave your thoughts in the comments.

Sphero's Mini app-powered robot is its smallest one yet

Over the past year, Sphero has been busy teaming up with Disney on connected toys for film franchises like Star Wars, Spider-Man and Cars. But today the company is launching a product that takes it back to its roots: a mini version of its original app-controlled robot. The new rolling ball, aptly named Sphero Mini, is about the same size as a ping pong ball and comes with a removable shell, which you can get in white, blue, green, orange or pink colors. As is to be expected given the different frame, it does come with a few tradeoffs compared to models like the SPRK+. Mini isn't waterproof and connection range is limited to 10 meters, as opposed to 30 on its higher-end sibling.

Do Not Disturb While Driving is my favorite iOS 11 feature

Do Not Disturb While Driving iOS 11

Apple released iOS 11 earlier this month. It's a pretty big change, adding plenty of new features to the mix, changing some things completely (Control Center), and for some folks it might have been worth the wait, while others may think the complete opposite. Which is pretty much par for the course with any new release, software or hardware.

For the most part, I think iOS 11 is fine. It's right on the same level as Android 8.0 Oreo. Refine most things, improve the overall experience, and add a few key new features to spice things up. It isn't a huge, revolutionary update. It's just meant to make an already powerful base even more stable, refined, and user friendly.

One feature above all others has become my new favorite, though.

The title of the article gives it away, but it's true. Do Not Disturb while driving is easily my new favorite feature in iOS 11. I had the realization today while I was driving, my phone resting in a small compartment in my car. I connect the phone to my car to listen to music, and, before DND While Driving was a thing, notifications used to ring through the cabin all the time. It was ridiculously annoying.

I could easily fix that particular issue by just putting the phone on vibrate, but that meant hearing it vibrate and still being notified that something was happening. Which, as you can probably relate to, means I want to check it. But I hate using my phone while I'm driving, and more often than not I just keep it in my pocket to help avoid the risk. But whether it vibrates or makes a sound, I know there's a notification waiting for me.

And that's why it's my favorite feature. Not just because it means I don't have to put my phone on vibrate (which also means I often forget about the change and miss notifications later, when I might not be right next to my phone), but also because it gets rid of the temptation altogether. Distracted driving is an issue that needs to be handled from a variety of different angles, but, on Apple's part, simply removing notifications while driving is great.

The fact that the feature works automatically, too, is great. You do need a car that can connect to the iPhone, either via a cable or by Bluetooth, but as long as that base is covered, Do Not Disturb While Driving will kick in as soon as the phone's connected to it. You can disable it, yeah, but, well, hopefully you don't while you're driving.

Up to this point, I have always tried to not use my phone while driving. Sometimes I succumb to the call of notifications, which isn't any fun to admit. But DND While Driving is going to help with that, and I love its inclusion with iOS 11. It's a fantastic feature, and while there is plenty more to like about Apple's latest update to its mobile operating system, this one thing has climbed the ranks as my favorite.

If you're using iOS 11, have you tried out Do Not Disturb While Driving? Are you a fan of the feature as well? Or is this something you disable by default? Let me know!

Samsung Galaxy S8 Active may launch at T-Mobile

Samsung Galaxy S8 Active Titanium Gold AT&T

After spending some time as an AT&T exclusive, the Galaxy S8 Active might soon make its way to another U.S. carrier.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 Active will is coming to T-Mobile, according to marketing materials viewed by VentureBeat. T-Mo’s GS8 Active is expected to be available in Meteor Gray and Titanium Gold color options, and it’ll reportedly carry the model number SM-G892T (AT&T’s model is the SM-G892A).

The bad news for T-Mobile customers is that as of right now, there’s no word on the T-Mo Galaxy S8 Active’s launch date or pricing. AT&T is selling the phone for $849.99.

Samsung’s Galaxy S Active phones are normally AT&T-exclusive in the U.S., but it’s possible that that might finally change this year. When AT&T announced the device, it said, “For a limited time, the latest Galaxy S8 Active device will be exclusively available from AT&T,” suggesting that the device will eventually make its way to another carrier.

The Galaxy S8 Active is a toughened version of the standard Galaxy S8, boasting a metal frame with corner bumpers as well as a textured back for added grip. The device is also shatter, water, and dust resistant.

In terms of raw specs, the GS8 Active is packing a 5.8-inch 2560x1440 Super AMOLED display, 12-megapixel rear camera with OIS, 8-megapixel front-facing camera, Snapdragon 835 processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, and a microSD slot. ZTE Axon M leak gives us a peek at the foldable dual-screen smartphone

ZTE Axon M Multy foldable smartphone image leak

Following rumors that suggested that ZTE is working on a smartphone with a foldable dual-screen design, an image that may show that very device has leaked.

An image that appears to show a hinge smartphone has been shared by Android Authority. The device is codenamed ZTE Axon Multy and may launch as the Axon M.

Looking at the device, it appears to have a hinged design with two displays. It’s said that when these two screens are folded out, they’ll combine to form a 6.8-inch screen with a resolution of 1920x2160. These dual screens would reportedly each display two apps at the same time.

Other details on this rumored ZTE Axon M are light, but ZTE is holding an event on October 17th, and it’s expected that this foldable smartphone will be the star of the show.

While the ZTE Axon M wouldn’t be the first foldable dual-screen smartphone we’ve ever seen — hi, Kyocera Echo — that form factor is one that we don’t often see. The Echo wasn’t particularly successful, but we’re pretty far out from that device. This ZTE Axon M is pretty different from most smartphones we see nowadays, and it’s unclear how consumers will respond. We’ll just have to wait and see how well the device works and what kind of features ZTE has cooked up for it.

Does this ZTE Axon M interest you?

FCC Chairman wants Apple to enable FM in iPhones for emergencies

You might think of radio as an archaic form of listening to music, but it's still one of the more effective ways to get information to people, especially when cell networks go down. Most smartphones already have an FM chip baked right into the chipset, but they tend to be inaccessible, especially in the US. Now FCC Chairman Ajit Pai is asking Apple to activate these FM chips already in iPhones. "Apple is the one major phone manufacturer that has resisted (activating the chips)," said Pai in a statement. "But I hope the company will reconsider its position, given the devastation wrought by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria."

If you’ve got a Moto X Pure Edition in the U.S., you can manually check for this update by going into Settings > About phone > System updates > Yes, I’m in. Keep in mind that these updates can take some time to roll out, so don’t fret if you don’t get it right away.

We’ve known for a year now that the Moto X Pure Edition would be updated to Android 7.0, we just didn’t know when that update would arrive. For example, the changelog for the update was posted back in April, but no update arrived then. It’s finally here now, though, and while Nougat is no longer the latest Android release, it’s still better than nothing for folks still using the Moto X Pure Edition.

FCC chairman wants Apple to activate FM radio chips in iPhones

iPhone 8 Plus rear hands-on

It used to be that having an FM radio chip in your smartphone wasn’t a thing in the U.S., with many devices arriving stateside with their FM radio chip disabled. That’s changed in recent years, with both manufacturers and carriers pushing for FM radio support, and now the FCC chairman is pushing for it, too.

FCC chairman Ajit Pai has released a statement urging Apple to activate the FM chips in iPhones. Pai points to the public safety benefits of having working FM radio in a smartphone, especially given damage caused by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria.

Here’s Pai’s full statement imploring Apple to enables the FM chips inside its iPhones:

“In recent years, I have repeatedly called on the wireless industry to activate the FM chips that are already installed in almost all smartphones sold in the United States. And I’ve specifically pointed out the public safety benefits of doing so. In fact, in my first public speech after I became Chairman, I observed that ‘[y]ou could make a case for activating chips on public safety grounds alone.’ When wireless networks go down during a natural disaster, smartphones with activated FM chips can allow Americans to get vital access to life-saving information. I applaud those companies that have done the right thing by activating the FM chips in their phones.

“Apple is the one major phone manufacturer that has resisted doing so. But I hope the company will reconsider its position, given the devastation wrought by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. That’s why I am asking Apple to activate the FM chips that are in its iPhones. It is time for Apple to step up to the plate and put the safety of the American people first. As the Sun Sentinel of South Florida put it, ‘Do the right thing, Mr. Cook. Flip the switch. Lives depend on it.’”

Previously, carriers were opposed to having FM radio chips activated in phones because if a customer is using the free FM radio, they’re not using cellular data that they have to pay for. Now carriers and manufacturers are coming around, and lately we’re reminded that FM radio is good for more than just free over the air entertainment. When cellular networks go down during a disaster, smartphone owners can still use FM radio to get information about what’s going on around them.

Does your smartphone have a working FM radio? If so, how often do you use it?

NVIDIA SHIELD TV owners, there’s a new update coming your way.

NVIDIA has released the SHIELD Experience Upgrade 6.0 for SHIELD TV. Perhaps the most notable addition is Google Assistant, giving you access to Google’s virtual assistant and all of its features on your TV.

With Google Assistant, you can ask to see videos in specific apps like Netflix and YouTube,  or you can just say something like “Play Ariana Grande videos” and the Assistant will get to work. You can also view your Google Photos library, ask general questions, control smart home products, and more.

Google Assistant on SHIELD TV is currently available in the U.S. It works just like it does on your phone, meaning that you just say “Ok Google” to call up the Assistant.

This update also enables the SHIELD TV to integrate with SmartThings hub using the SmartThings Link, an updated Vudu app with voice search and a better UI, 360-degree video in YouTube, security updates, and more.

Uber's former self-driving lead is creating an AI religion

In a development that wouldn't be out of place in a Black Mirror episode, we could soon be worshipping an artificially intelligent god figure. And this isn't a satirical take on our existing roles as disciples of social media, or the transcendental joy we feel when an Uber Eats delivery arrives. According to state filings uncovered by Wired, in September 2015 disgraced engineer Anthony Levandowski established a non-profit religious corporation called Way of the Future. Its mission: "To develop and promote the realization of a Godhead based on artificial intelligence and through understanding and worship of the Godhead contribute to the betterment of society." In the last two months alone we've seen robots perform funeral ceremonies and AI chips mimic the human brain -- could a Deus ex Machina really be that far behind?

Worldwide flight delays caused by glitchy check-in system

Passengers around the world have been enduring long delays thanks to a glitchy passenger reservation system, passengers, airlines and airports are reporting. Airports as far flung as London's Gatwick, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Melbourne and Baltimore Washington have all reported issues. According to Gatwick, it was caused by a problem with Amadeus Altea, a passenger management system used by 125 airlines. That company confirmed that it's having a "network issue," according to the BBC, but has started restoring services.

NVIDIA's Shield TV is the latest home for Google Assistant

Last month at IFA, we heard that more Google Assistant-integrating speakers and appliances were on the way. Today, NVIDIA's Shield TV joins the list, adding the search giant's digital assistant SDK to its retinue of entertainment features. In short, instead of a paltry speaker, you'll be able to use your entire home theater setup to command your life, one 'OK Google' at a time. In fact, Google says Assistant is coming to Android TV on the whole, so if you have another device running that platform, voice control is likely coming soon.

Gene editing could make wheat safe for celiac sufferers

Celiac disease is thought to affect 1 in 100 people worldwide. Although doctors are still grappling with the causes of the autoimmune disorder, one thing is for sure: If you're diagnosed it with it, you should avoid gluten. But maintaining long-lasting dietary changes isn't easy -- especially when you have to discard some of the most common food items, like bread. Fortunately, hope may be at hand, thanks to good old science. Using gene-editing, researchers from Spain's Institute for Sustainable Agriculture are creating new types of wheat that reduce immune reactions in celiac disease sufferers.

HSBC app will let you manage accounts from multiple banks

HSBC is readying a mobile app that will allow customers to manage multiple accounts from different banks. "HSBC Beta" will support 21 money-keepers at launch, including Santander, Lloyds and Barclays, so users can review their current account, loans, mortgages and savings simultaneously. It's the first time a major UK bank has offered such a service. In August 2016, the Competition and Markets Authority declared that all banks would need to adopt "Open Banking" by early 2018, allowing this sort of functionality. Clearly, it's made a difference, though HSBC is keen to stress that it was working on the technology before the ruling.

White House: Yes, the president blocks critics on Twitter

Yes, the president does block critics on Twitter. That's what the latest legal filing related to President Trump's Twitter activities has revealed. If you'll recall, seven individuals filed a lawsuit claiming Trump is violating the First Amendment by barring their access to his account. Now, the Knight First Amendment Institute, a Columbia University group helping the plaintiffs, has announced that both sides have filed a formal legal acknowledgement in which they agree upon a set of facts. In that filing, the White House said it will not contest the plaintiffs' claims.
