Facebook will use AI to help correct skewed 360-degree photos

Ever since Facebook added 360-degree photos to your news feed last year, more and more images of this type have appeared. You can even take and share these full-circle images right from your mobile device, as well, making them even more ubiquitous. Finding them is even easier with Facebook's Gear VR app, too. As reported by VentureBeat, the social network is now using deep neural networks to analyze 360-degree photos to fix the image orientation for a better viewing experience, especially in VR.

What's the longest you've used a single microSD card?

SanDisk microSD card

A friend of mine is a diehard Android fan. He's made it perfectly clear to me over the years that he will never leave Android. He'll also be the first to tell you that he can't even remember half the things his phone is capable of, and, even if he could, he still wouldn't use half the features available to him. He loves Android and he's not planning on changing course anytime soon.

He has plenty of reasons to like Android, as millions of people all over the planet do, of course. It's heavily customizable, which he does like doing from time to time. He likes Google as a company in general. And he likes the fact that he's not stuck to one manufacturer. He's sold phones for a long part of his adult life, so he's a fan of switching from one to another, especially when the newest and "best" thing arrives.

He also loves it because of the microSD card.

He's never considered a phone that doesn't have a microSD card slot. Even as cloud storage has improved, and become even more affordable and accessible, he flat-out refuses to give up the physical memory card he can bring with him anywhere. I'm not even entirely sure how he hasn't filled it up by now, or maybe he has (a few times) and he's simply offloaded the content therein to make room and keep using it.

The idea is a pretty solid one, of course. Being able to just bring those memories with you, from one device to the next, is great. But I'd argue that cloud storage makes that easier than a microSD card slot, especially these days. Sure, it's always possible that you could lose that digitally-stored content in some catastrophic event that takes down the servers, but it's also just as possible you lose that microSD card somehow.

It's an interesting thing that Android has supported a microSD card slot for so long. So long in fact that it's one of the platform's defining features even to this day. But just last year Google itself moved away from supporting the feature in its own Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones. And I wouldn't be too surprised to hear those devices' successors don't feature the card slot, either. Of course, considering how hard Google has been pushing its own cloud services, including Google Photos, going that route doesn't seem all that surprising, really.

But, I'm curious. If you have been using Android for years, and you've mainly relied on a microSD card from one device to the next, how long have you been using your current storage option? What's the longest you've gone using one microSD card? Let me know!

T-Mobile schedules Un-carrier Next announcement for September 6th

T-Mobile Un-carrier 3 event

T-Mobile has made several Un-carrier moves that shook up the mobile industry, and it looks like another one is happening soon.

T-Mobile says that it’ll make an Un-carrier Next announcement on September 6th. The big reveal will happen at 8:00 am PT/11:00 am ET, but T-Mo is remaining tight-lipped about what it’s got planned.

Previous T-Mobile Un-carrier moves have included things like free stock and weekly gifts for customers, the JUMP! phone lease program, and Binge On for video streaming that doesn’t count against your data usage. It’s unclear exactly that T-Mobile will announce as part of Un-carrier Next, but considering T-Mo’s history with Un-carrier moves, it’ll definitely be worth keeping an eye out for.

What do you think T-Mobile will announce as part of Un-carrier Next?

Moto X4 debuts with dual rear cameras and Amazon Alexa integration

Moto X4 black official front back side

The parade of new Android phones at IFA 2017 continues today with the official debut of the Moto X4.

The Moto X4 features an anodized aluminum frame and Gorilla Glass on both its front and rear. The whole package is IP68-rated for water and dust resistance, too, so you don’t have to worry about the X4 getting a little wet.

Another highlight feature of the Moto X4 is its dual rear camera setup. There are 12-megapixel standard and 8-megapixel wide angle sensors on the back of the X4, letting you do things like add blurry backgrounds to your photos. There’s also a new Landmark Detection feature that’ll let you point the camera at an object of interest to learn more about it, scan a business card and add the info to your contacts, and more.

The Moto X4 runs Android 7.1 Nougat and comes with Amazon’s Alexa built-in, meaning that you can access the assistant without unlocking your phone. Also included with the X4 is a 5.2-inch 1920x1080 display with a 16-megapixel front-facing camera above it and a fingerprint reader below it.

Moto X4 official silver pair

Inside the Moto X4’s glass and aluminum body lives a Snapdragon 630 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and a microSD slot for adding more storage if you’d like. There’s also NFC, a 3.5mm headphone jack, USB Type-C, and a 3,000mAh battery powering the whole package.

Motorola says that the Moto X4 will launch in various countries in Europe in September for €399 ($475 USD). A U.S. launch is planned for this fall, but there’s no word on how much the Moto X4 will cost when it does make its way stateside.

The Moto X line used to be Motorola’s flagship, but now the Moto Z devices are Motorola’s premium offerings. That doesn’t mean that the Moto X4 is a bad phone, though. In fact, it looks like a pretty solid mid-range offering with respectable features like a 5.2-inch full HD screen, dual rear cameras, and IP68 water resistance. So if you’re in the market for an affordable, mid-range Android phone, the Moto X4 might be worth keeping on your radar.

The Moto X is finally back, and it brought Alexa with it

It's been years since we got a Moto X, but Lenovo hasn't forgotten about Motorola's one-time flagship. As predicted by leaks, Motorola unveiled the fourth-generation model at IFA in Berlin, and it's... definitely not the Moto X you remember. For one, it's among the few smartphones out there with built-in support for Amazon's Alexa, and it's part of an even more exclusive club of devices that just let you speak to her the way you'd speak to an Echo. Motorola confirmed that it was working on Alexa-capable devices at this year's Mobile World Congress, but we're a little surprised Amazon's assistant first wound up here instead of, say, a fancy Moto Mod.

Moto X4 hands-on: Premium looks and features on a budget

The world may be distracted by the advanced, high-end technology of the Galaxy Note 8 and the highly anticipated iPhone 8, but those devices also tend to come with appropriately hefty prices. For people looking for budget-friendlier options that look just as premium and perform respectably will soon have a new candidate to consider. Here at IFA in Berlin, Moto unveiled the X4 — its latest midrange handset which will retail in Europe for €399 in September. It offers dual cameras and an elegant design for the price, and after a brief hands-on with the new handset, I'm pretty taken by how it looks.

iOS 11 beta 9 is now available to registered developers, just three days after the last beta update. If you’re a developer, you can get this update by going into Apple’s Developer Center or by going to Settings > General > Software Update on your enrolled iOS device.

This new iOS 11 beta update doesn’t appear to be rolling out to public testers in the Apple Beta Software Program quite yet. iOS 11 is the next major update for Apple’s mobile operating system. It brings with it a redesigned and customizable Control Center, an app dock for the iPad, a Files app, Do Not Disturb While Driving, and much more.

Apple has said that iOS 11 will be released to the public this fall. It’s possible that the release will happen in the days following Apple’s September 12th event, so it may not be long before everyone gets to sink their teeth into iOS 11’s new features.

Instagram says hackers swiped contact info for verified users

Instagram just suffered a potentially serious (and this time, very real) data breach. T-Mobile may kick off Galaxy Note 8 BOGO deal on September 1st

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Midnight Black

Heads up, T-Mobile customers, because a new leak suggests that there’s a Galaxy Note 8 deal coming your way soon.

T-Mobile is planning to launch a Buy One, Get One deal on the Galaxy Note 8. The offer will start on September 1st and run for a limited time, according to sources speaking to TmoNews.

With this deal, you’ll need to buy a Galaxy Note 8 on EIP and then add a new line and buy another Note 8, a Galaxy S8, or a Galaxy S8+. You then go to T-Mobile’s promotions website and enter the promo code 17SAMN8BOGO and T-Mo will send you a prepaid MasterCard card to cover the cost of your second device.

T-Mobile Galaxy Note 8 BOGO deal leak

This deal is available to customers on T-Mobile One and Simple Choice Unlimited rate plans. It’s also worth noting that, according to the leaked documents, this deal is retroactive for pre-orders. That means that T-Mobile customers that’ve already pre-ordered the Note 8 on EIP can take advantage of this offer as well.

Some customers will likely be frustrated by the fact that this deal requires you to add a new line to get a free Note 8. We’ve seen quite a few BOGO deals from T-Mobile lately that require you to add a line, though, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the same requirement apply to this Galaxy Note 8 BOGO deal.

Stay tuned and we’ll let you know when T-Mobile makes this deal official.

How would the LG V30 fare without its most iconic features?

LG V30 render

The end of summer is always a fun time for mobile enthusiasts as it marks the start of a plethora of big name smartphone releases. We’ve already seen the reveal of the Moto Z2 Force, and just last week we were introduced to the Samsung Galaxy Note 8. With IFA (Europe’s equivalent to CES) just around the corner, we anticipate a few more additions to an already fruitful 2017 smartphone lineup, two of which are the highly anticipated LG V30 and V30 Plus smartphones.

LG’s V series is only a few years old at this point, but is still a force to be reckoned with. A second flagship series in addition to its already popular G series, the V series of devices tends to be larger and more powerful than the G series. In the past, the V series also showcased different features from the G series as well, most notably a secondary display.

However, that appears to be changing this year. Leaks for the V30 show that the alleged device will lack a secondary display. Instead, the V30 will supposedly use the same 2:1 LG G6FullVision display that the LG G6 showed off earlier this year. Like the G6, it will also feature a non-removable battery.

On the outside, it would appear that the V30 will look like a larger G6, except with curved edges more akin to the Galaxy S8 (the G6 has a flat screen). The most notable changes will take place within the specs of the device. The V30 is said to feature a 6-inch display, Snapdragon 835 processor, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of internal storage. The LG V30 Plus will allegedly feature a beefier 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

In addition, both LG V30 devices are likely to place a focus on both camera and audio quality, with a 32-bit Hi-Fi audio DAC included.

Although these details aren’t official nor set in stone, leads are looking pretty solid. While the V30 looks sleek, I can’t help but wonder if it’s going to get lost in sea of other smartphones that now look nearly identical to it.

I can’t fault LG for using a design that’s rapidly gained popularity. Even the LG G6 managed to turn heads earlier this year by being among the first smartphones in 2017 to feature extremely slim bezels, so in theory it would seem like bringing the same design to the V30, along with more powerful specs, might be a better move than sticking with the whole secondary display thing. Many also considered the secondary display more of a “gimmick” than a truly useful feature.

However, considering the secondary display was probably the most unique thing about the V series, it seems like the V30 also stands a significant chance of being forgotten, especially since its reveal will be sandwiched between the Galaxy Note 8, Apple iPhone 8, and especially the Google Pixel XL 2, which will also allegedly be made by LG and feature much of the same design as the V30. The V series was also the last beacon of hope for LG fans who stuck around for its removable battery.

I feel like I say this a lot, especially lately, but ultimately price will play a significant role here. The LG G6 received (and still receives) some impressive discounts compared to the competition, and its affordability makes it an appealing factor when comparing smartphones. Offering similar discounts or promotions on the V30 seems like a surefire way to gain more traction among smartphones that are far more popular. And when you consider how much the Note 8 costs and how much the iPhone 8 and Pixel 2/XL 2 are rumored to cost, having the cheaper alternative might be the best advantage it can have.

Regardless, the V30 still looks like a solid smartphone with strong specs. It will be exciting to see what the official details of the device are during LG’s press conference in Berlin come tomorrow (very early morning hours in the U.S.).

Readers, what are your thoughts on this change? Do you think LG should have kept the secondary display in the V30, or are slim bezels the way to go?

Alexa and Cortana assistants will soon integrate thanks to Amazon and Microsoft partnership

Alexa Cortana integration partnership

There are several digital assistants on the market, and today it was announced that two of them are partnering up.

Amazon and Microsoft are partnering to enable Alexa and Cortana to interact with one another. This means that you’ll be able to use Alexa to access Cortana productivity features like book a meeting or access your work calendars. You’ll be able to access these features by saying “Alexa, open Cortana” on an Alexa-enabled device.

Meanwhile, you’ll be able to access Alexa features with Cortana on Windows 10 PCs, iPhones, and Android devices by saying “Hey Cortana, open Alexa”. You’ll then be able to do things like control smart home devices, shop on Amazon, or access other Alexa skills.

Alexa and Cortana integration will roll out later this year.

This partnership could be exciting for folks that already rely on Alexa or Cortana but don’t have easy access to the other assistant. With this integration, those folks are gaining access to an additional set of skills. For example, Cortana uses can use Alexa to control the lights in their home or order a Domino’s pizza.

Do you use either Alexa or Cortana?

Samsung intros new Gear Sport and Gear Fit2 Pro wearables, updated Gear IconX wireless earbuds

Samsung Gear Sport smartwatch official

IFA doesn’t start in Germany for another couple of days, but Samsung just couldn’t wait any longer to introduce its new range of wearable devices.

The Samsung Gear Sport is the newest model in Samsung’s line of Gear smartwatches. As its name suggests, the Gear Sport is a fitness-focused device, boasting MIL-STD-810G certification for resistance to shock, high and low temperatures, and more. The Gear Sport also features 5 ATM of water resistance.

In terms of specs, the Gear Sport runs Tizen on a 1.2-inch 360x360 circular Super AMOLED display. It’s got a dual-core processor, 4GB of storage, and 768MB of RAM under its hood, as well as a 300mAh battery and NFC for Samsung Pay. The Gear Sport comes with blue and black bands that can be swapped for any other 20mm band that you’d like.

There’s no word yet on when the Gear Sport will launch or how much it’ll cost when it does.

Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro official

Also revealed today is Samsung’s Gear Fit2 Pro, another fitness-friendly wearable. The Gear Fit2 Pro features the same MIL-STD-810G and 5 ATM ratings as the Gear Sport, but comes in a more bracelet-like form factor. It also includes swim and heart rate monitoring features and a built-in GPS to help you accurately tracking your activities.

The Gear Fit2 Pro is packing a 1.5-inch 216x432 curved Super AMOLED display, dual-core processor, 4GB of storage, and 512MB of RAM. It’s running Tizen like the Gear Sport, and it’s got a 200mAh battery.

Samsung will begin taking pre-orders for the Gear Fit2 Pro tomorrow, August 31st, for $199. A full launch is scheduled for September 15th.

Samsung Gear IconX 2017 wireless earbuds official

Rounding out today’s announcements are the updated Gear IconX earbuds. These wireless earbuds boast improved battery life over the original model, offering up to 7 hours of playback in standalone mode or 5 hours in Bluetooth mode. Included is a charging case that offers 1 extra charge on the go.

The Gear IconX earbuds offer 4GB of storage per earbud so that you can store music directly on them.

Unfortunately, like the Gear Sport, there’s no word on when the new Gear IconX earbuds will launch or how much they’ll cost. The original Gear IconX sold for $199, though, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the updated version land with a similar price tag.

iPhone 8 software details leak, including home button replacement

iPhone 8 design leak

We’ve seen quite a few leaks to date that focus on the iPhone 8 hardware and its all-screen design, but today the rumor mill is switching gears and offering up details on the new iPhone’s software.

Apple is testing the removal of the home button on the iPhone 8, according to a report from Bloomberg, and replacing it with a thin software bar at the bottom of the display. It’s said that you can drag up on this bar from the lock screen to open the phone, and when inside an app, dragging up on the bar will go into the multitasking menu. You can then continue to drag upward to return to the home screen.

The removal of the home button on the iPhone 8 would be a big deal because every other iPhone released in the past 10 years has had that home button. Such a move could also make sense, though. Removing the physical Home button would help achieve the iPhone 8’s all-screen design, and simply switching to a virtual home button could take up a lot of valuable screen space.

Today’s report goes on to share a couple more details about the iPhone 8’s software. It’s said that the device will have a new multitasking view with several standalone cards rather than the current stack of cards interface. The report also says that the iPhone 8’s app dock will be a floating gray bar similar to the iPad’s dock on iOS 11, which you can see here.

It’s rumored that Apple will unveil the iPhone 8, along with two other new iPhone models and a new Apple Watch, at an event on September 12th.

Based on the copy someone posted on Reddit, the email is asking for a photo ID clearly showing your picture, signature and current billing address. The email was sent by an @essential address and looks pretty legit, but since the company says it's investigating the situation and has "taken steps to mitigate" the issue, then it's best to assume that it's a phishing scheme or a scam of some sort. Needless to say, do not reply to it with any identifying info if you've received something similar.

Zeiss VR One Connect puts PC games on mobile VR headsets

PC-powered VR gaming requires a minimum $500 investment just for the headset, but Zeiss and Steam have introduced a cheaper way to do it. The Zeiss VR One Connect runs SteamVR games powered by a PC, but sends a pre-rendered display signal to a smartphone installed in a mobile VR headset. You can then game using a pair of Zeiss wireless controllers, connected by Bluetooth to your iOS or Android smartphone with a screen between 4.7 and 5.5 inches.

Verizon Pixel and Pixel XL receiving Android 8.0 Oreo update today

Android 8.0 Oreo Google Pixel XL hands-on

One week after Google officially revealed Android 8.0 Oreo, the update is starting to roll out to the public.

Verizon says that it’s starting to update its Google Pixel and Pixel XL to Android 8.0. The update bumps both phones to build number OPR6.170623.012 and includes Android Oreo features like picture-in-picture, notification dots, autofill, and more.

This update will likely go out over the air in stages over the coming days, so if you don’t have it on your Pixel or Pixel XL yet, don’t fret. If you’d like to manually check for the update, you can do so by going into Settings > System > System updates > Check for update.

Google previously said that Oreo updates for the Pixel, Pixel XL and select Nexus devices would begin rolling out “soon”, and it looks that time is now for Pixel phones on Verizon. We haven’t yet seen any other devices receive a taste of Oreo yet, but now that Verizon’s pushing these updates, more Oreo updates can’t be too far off.

While you're waiting for your Oreo update, you can pass the time by checking out our hands-on video with Android 8.0 on the Google Pixel XL.

You can now buy Diesel's Android Wear smartwatch

Diesel On Full Guard Android Wear smartwatch

After debuting way back in March, the first Diesel Android Wear smartwatch is now available for purchase.

The Diesel On Full Guard is now available, and you can get it from Macy’s. Pricing starts at $325 for a model with a brown or black leather strap, and there are also models available with black and gold stainless steel bracelets for $350.

Most models are currently 24-30 business days away from shipping. The brown leather strap model being is the closest to shipping, with orders expected to begin going out within 14 business days.

Diesel’s new Android Wear smartwatch features a 48mm stainless steel case, Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor, IP67 water resistance, and a battery that’s said to give you a full day on one charge.

Diesel is also planning on launching an Android app called T-ON-I that’ll act as a companion to its new Android Wear smartwatch.

We’ve seen Fossil, Diesel’s parent company, release quite a few Android Wear smartwatches in recent years, so it makes sense for an Android Wear-powered Diesel watch to come along, too. The Diesel brand has a lot of fans, and now they can get an Android Wear smartwatch with Diesel styling.

Misfit delays its Android Wear smartwatch to October

Misfit said that its Vapor smartwatch would arrive this summer, but the season's nearly over and it has yet to put the device on your wrist. What gives? Well, there's been a delay... although you won't have to wait too much longer. The company tells us that the Android Wear device is now slated to ship in October, 9 months after its CES debut. Misfit tells us that it moved the release because it has "high expectations" for the Vapor and wants to "refine every detail" until the device is "truly outstanding." In other words, the Vapor still had some rough spots as the end-of-summer deadline approached.

YouTube rolling out refreshed logo and updates to mobile and desktop

Today’s a big day for YouTube, as the video streaming site unveils a new logo and some changes to its mobile app and desktop site.

First up, the updated YouTube icon moves the “Tube” from YouTube out of the red tube. The red tube moves to the left of the YouTube name and now features the play button. YouTube says that the updated logo and icon are more flexible and work across a variety of devices, and they’ll both be rolling out across the mobile and desktop versions of YouTube starting today.

New YouTube logo

YouTube today also detailed the recent changes that it’s made to its mobile app. These include a white header to place more of a focus on the video content; gestures, like one that’s coming later this year that’ll let you jump between videos by swiping left and right; support for speeding up and slowing down playback on mobile; and a YouTube video player that’ll adapt to the video format you’re watching, whether its vertical, square, or horizontal.

Meanwhile, the desktop version of YouTube is getting a new design that’s rolling out around the globe today. This new-look YouTube features a Material Design that aims to place the focus on the video content.

Instagram now lets you post landscape and portrait photo albums

Instagram now lets you post photo albums with landscape and portrait pictures. Since the feature was introduced in February, you’ve only been able to post square-format photos — very old-school Instagram. But now, you’ll be able to post pictures in the format of your choosing, rather than cropping down to a square.

The downside is that it seems like you’ll still have to choose one photo format and then stick with it — from the sound of it, you won’t be able to create an album with landscape and square or portrait photos.

Still, it’s a good change. I really enjoy posting portrait photos on Instagram, since they look great taking up the entire screen. But posting multiple in a row is pretty annoying (again, since they take up the entire...

Google debuts ARCore, a new augmented reality effort for Android

Google is no stranger to augmented reality, having spent the past few years on Tango. Today the company is rebooting its AR efforts, though, with a new Android SDK.

ARCore is Google’s newest attempt at making AR mainstream. Unlike Tango, ARCore works without any extra hardware, meaning that it can be offered on many more Android devices.

Google is launching an ARCore preview today on the Pixel and Samsung Galaxy S8. The company aims to have ARCore on more than 100 million devices running Android 7.0 or higher at the end of its preview, and it’s working with companies like Samsung, Huawei, LG, ASUS, and others to achieve that goal.

Google ARCore official

With ARCore, users can take advantage of the phone’s camera and sensors to place virtual objects in the real world. ARCore uses Java/OpenGL, Unity, and Unreal and places a focus on the placement of objects and the world around them. You can put an object on a table or other horizontal surface, and the phone can use feature points in the room and IMU sensor data to keep an object accurately placed as you and your phone move. ARCore also observes ambient light in the room to light virtual objects in ways that match their surroundings to make them more realistic.

ARCore is Google’s answer to ARKit, which is Apple’s own augmented reality effort that’s coming to iOS 11 devices. ARCore is a big step up from Google’s Tango effort because it doesn’t require extra sensors or anything like that, meaning that it can be quickly spread to many more people. It’s still in early days, so for now we’ll have to wait and see how Google’s ARCore preview plays out, but this AR battle between Google and Apple could help to push both companies to make their augmented reality efforts better.

Will big bezels be a deal breaker by 2018?

Apple iPhone 7 Samsung Galaxy S8

The past few of years, to me, have felt a little stagnant when it comes to innovative smartphone designs. It mostly felt like it was the same slabs with the same colors and the same features. Occasionally something new would come alone, like Samsung’s Edge displays or LG’s and Motorola’s modular designs last year, but for the most part those features stayed unique. LG even gave up on the modular dream this year in the LG G6 to return to its roots.

Yet, even by going back to a more traditional design, LG managed to turn heads with the G6. How? The same way everybody else is: slimming down the bezels.

Having slim bezels is rapidly becoming an expectation of consumers, likely because it gives them something they want without much compromise. Remember when “big phones” were just a phase, and became quite obviously not a phase, mom? Even I, self-proclaimed president of the People for Compact Phones Club, have experienced fleeting moments of missing the benefits of a larger screen since returning to the Hobbit-sized iPhone SE with its 4-inch display. However, even big phones have their limits – but those limits are much less restrictive if one can increase the screen size without increasing the size of the phone itself. Therein lies the beauty of slim bezels.

I have yet to move on to a smartphone with slim bezels, but it’s becoming harder to ignore at this point. Between the Xiaomi Mi Mix, LG G6, Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+, Essential, Galaxy Note 8, and presumably the Apple iPhone 8 and Google Pixel 2, it’s abundantly clear that bezel-free (or close to it) is the way to be. And it doesn’t stop there – numerous budget phones are getting in on the hype, too.

I had my reserves at first, mostly because I had a less-than-stellar experience with the Galaxy S7 Edge. With the Edge features turned on, I experienced constant accidental palm and finger registries. They were much less frequent when I turned them off, but it still occurred from time to time. Also, Samsung is still somewhat of a loner when it comes to sloped edges on their displays; thus far, most OEMs who are keen on shrinking bezels just make really slim bezels with a traditionally flat display, so if edges aren’t your thing either, it’s pretty easy to find alternatives.

It’s clear from the rapid growth of the trend that this is the new “normal” going forward. Big phones took a while to take over as much as it has, but slim bezels truly became an overnight sensation. Considering so many flagships already feature this stunning design, it already feels likes phones without slim bezels have an outdated design in comparison.

I think this year will still be forgiving to phones that opted not to slim bezels down, like the HTC U 11 and Nokia 8, but I predict that consumers and reviewers will have different expectations next year. Phones with big bezels are quickly going the way of the dodo bird, and I’m finding it increasingly difficult to argue against it as it’s exactly the solution I’ve been waiting for. As somebody who values compact-sized devices but also enjoys larger screens, this new age of slim bezels has quickly grown on me.

Readers, what are your thoughts? Do you think slim bezels are the only way to go from here on out, or is there a significant amount of people who prefer larger bezels? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Amazon Echo devices gaining multi-room audio support

Amazon Echo Dot hands-on review

Amazon Echo owners, you’re getting a nifty new feature today.

Amazon is now rolling out multi-room audio support for the Echo, Echo Dot, and Echo Show. This means that you can sync your music playback between devices to play songs throughout your home.

To start, multi-room audio is supported on songs from Amazon Music, TuneIn, iHeartRadio, and Pandora. Support for Spotify and SiriusXM is coming soon.

Echo device owners can enable multi-room audio by launching the Alexa app on their phone and creating groups of two or more Echo devices by naming the group something like “upstairs”. You’ll then say something like “Alexa, play Hootie and the Blowfish upstairs” and playback on your Echo devices will begin.

Multi-room audio is a pretty nice new feature for folks that own multiple Echo devices. Now you can start playing music on one device, then move to another room in your house and keep listening to the same song, all without having to carry a speaker or headphones with you or anything complicated like that.

If you’d like to add an Amazon Echo or two to your house to take advantage of this new multi-room audio feature, you can now score a discounted Echo Dot for $44.99 or an Echo Show for $229.99. The Amazon Echo is currently sold out, but there are refurbished models available for $129.99, $50 off the price of a new Echo.

Amazon today also announced Connected Speaker APIs, which will let owners of any Alexa-enabled device control music playback on connected audio systems. Amazon is working with companies like Sonos, Bose, Sound United, and Samsung on this feature.

Google unveils ARCore, its answer to Apple’s ARKit

A few months ago at WWDC, Apple unveiled ARKit, the company's first-ever attempt at an augmented reality platform. With it, developers could weave AR apps with relative ease, especially since any iOS 11 device would be compatible with it. Examples so far include a 'Take On Me' style music video, a virtual pet game, a restaurant app that can display virtual food on a plate and many, many more. If that sounds pretty impressive to you, well, Google must've thought so too. That's because it's coming out with its very own augmented reality platform, and it's called ARCore.

Google pulls 300 Android apps used for DDoS attacks

If a random storage manager or video player you downloaded recently has disappeared from your Android device, don't worry: it might have been for your own good. Google has removed 300 apps from the Play store, which were apparently merely masquerading as legitimate applications. In truth, they were made to hi-jack your phone so it can be used as part of a botnet's distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. WireX, as the botnet is called, pummeled several content providers and delivery networks with traffic from the devices it hi-jacked on August 17th, though it's been active since around August 2nd. In some cases, it also acted as a ransomware, demanding money from its victim.
