Google Store launches mail-in repair service for Pixel devices

If you're in the US and have a broken Pixel device, you might be able to get Google itself to fix it for you instead of a third-party company. The Google Store has just opened a virtual Repair Center, giving you the option to mail the tech giant your Pixel and Pixel 2 devices to be looked at and fixed. You can start the process by going to the portal, opening a ticket and providing your device's IMEI number.

Cellphone and internet adoption may have peaked in the US

There's no question that technologies like cellphones and internet access have become ubiquitous, but they now appear to be hitting their peak in the US. Pew Research Center's latest technology study has shown that key categories technological adoption has gone virtually unchanged since the last study in 2016, suggesting they've hit saturation points. Much like two years ago, about 95 percent of all Americans studied (99 percent in the ages 18-49 group) have cellphones, 89 percent have internet access, 77 percent have smartphones and 69 percent use social networks. In fact, PC adoption went down -- 73 percent have a computer where 78 percent did in 2016.

Conference app for the UK’s Conservative Party leaked attendee data

This weekend, members of the UK’s Conservative Party kicked off their annual conference in Birmingham, using the event to highlight their plans and priorities for the coming year. This year’s event had a rocky start: its official app allowed users to access personal contact information of other attendees, without a password.

According to the BBC, the app had a button that allowed users to press a button and enter an attendee’s e-mail address, which gave them access without prompting them for a password. Several attendees reported that they were not only able to access non-public information in the accounts of various party members such as phone numbers and e-mail addresses, but they could also change said information. Various...

Some iPhone XS units won't charge until you wake the screen

It wouldn't be a major phone launch without some teething troubles, and the iPhone XS appears to be no exception to the rule. Some device owners on Apple's forums, Reddit and Unbox Therapy (among others) have reported that their units won't charge properly through the Lightning cable until the screen wakes up. In certain cases, it won't work until you both wake the screen and reconnect. Suffice it to say this could be inconvenient if you plugged in at night and were counting on a full charge the following day.

Third-generation Chromecast purchased at Best Buy before its official announcement

Third generation Google Chromecast

Google may introduce a new Chromecast model at its event on October 9th, but one lucky person may have gotten their hands on the upcoming device early.

Reddit user GroveStreetHomie says that they went to Best Buy to get a Chromecast and found this model with updated packaging. When they tried to buy it, the Best Buy employee couldn't scan the device because it wasn't in the system and had a release date of October 9th. Since they already had it and the device has the same price as the current Chromecast, though, Best Buy went ahead and sold this new Chromecast.

This third generation Chromecast model is described as seeming "a little thicker" than the current Chromecast. It has a matte top rather than a glossy finish like the current model, and the Chrome logo has been replaced by a "G" logo. The device is still microUSB, and Google apparently removed the magnetic HDMI connector from this updated model.

Unfortunately, the Reddit user says that they can't set this new Chromecast up yet because it says that it requires a Google Home app update that hasn't been released yet.

We saw a new Chromecast device with Bluetooth and improved Wi-Fi connectivity in the FCC last month, and so it's possible that this device purchased from Best Buy is that model. The new Chromecast sold by Best Buy has the model number NC2-6A5, which is the same as the current Chromecast but is also the same model number that we saw on the updated model in the FCC.

If this new Chromecast is indeed the updated model with Bluetooth and improved Wi-Fi, will you buy one?

Watch the iPhone XS survive drop tests on concrete

We've all had that brief moment of panic when our (probably expensive) smartphones plunge onto solid ground, so Apple's claim that the glass on Apple's latest iPhones is the toughest on any smartphone might be welcome news for the clumsiest among us. To see if Apple's proclamation held weight, Tom's Guide put the iPhone XS and XS Max through their paces with a drop test onto concrete from varying heights on the edge, face and rear of the devices.

ITC judge denies Qualcomm's request, won't stop iPhone imports

While the patent lawsuit battle between Qualcomm and Apple is far from over -- remember how long it took for things to get settled with Samsung? -- we do have an update. On Friday, U.S. International Trade Commission judge Thomas Pender found (PDF) that the iPhones violate one of Qualcomm's patents, but still refused to block imports of the devices. Their squabble is focused on Apple's use of Intel chips instead of those made or licensed by Qualcomm, and how they're being used in some iPhones.

According to Pender, "statutory public interest factors" weighed into his decision against issuing a ban. Other judges will review the decision, but as Bloomberg explained, if this holds up it removes a tool Qualcomm could use as leverage for a possible settlement from Apple. Reuters quoted Qualcomm lawyer Don Rosenberg saying "It makes no sense to then allow infringement to continue by denying an import ban."

Apple is glad its imports haven't been banned, while Intel's general counsel, Steve Rodgers published a blog post that said "(Qualcomm) publicly disparaged Intel's products – products created by the innovation and hard work of dedicated teams of scientists and engineers at Intel." We'll see everyone soon for the next round.

LG Watch W7 smartwatch may debut alongside LG V40 ThinQ

LG Watch Style hands-on

We already know that the LG V40 ThinQ will be unveiled on October 3rd, but apparently that won't be the only new piece of hardware that LG shows at that event.

LG is planning to introduce a new smartwatch called the LG Watch W7 alongside the LG V40 ThinQ, according to prominent leaker Evan Blass. A report from earlier this year claimed that the watch, then known as the LG Watch Timepiece, will offer features like a round 1.2-inch 360x360 LCD screen, 4GB of storage, 768MB of RAM, and a Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor. Also included will be IP68 water and dust resistance along with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, but no cellular connectivity is expected.

Rounding out the upcoming watch's rumored specs is a 240mAh battery, a stainless steel case, and "highly precise quartz movement" along with physical watch hands that are allegedly meant to help extend battery life and ensure accurate time tracking.

It's worth noting that Qualcomm recently introduced a new Snapdragon Wear 3100 processor for smartwatches which is expected to begin appearing in devices in Q4 2018. If this LG Watch W7 does indeed come to market with an older Snapdragon Wear 2100 instead, that'll be a bit disappointing. We'll just have to wait for October 3rd to roll around to see exactly what this new watch is made of.

MoviePass is now forcing former users to opt out of new plan or risk being charged

The latest attempt from struggling theater subscription service MoviePass to retain its dwindling user base comes in the form of yet another change to its monthly plan. This time, however, the company is automatically enrolling lapsed former subscribers into its service, saying its choosing those users to be part of a “select test group” to try a version of MoviePass similar to its original one-movie-per-day plan.

In an email sent to select MoviePass customers who decided not to opt into the company’s revised three-movie monthly plan, first unveiled last month, the company says it’s decided to enroll those people into a new subscription because “we really hope you begin enjoying your MoviePass subscription.” If they don’t want to be...

The company is now facing a class-action complaint filed on behalf of one California resident, Carla Echavarria, and one Virginia resident, Derick Walker. Both allege that Facebook’s lack of proper security has exposed them and additional potential class members to a significantly increased chance of identity theft as a result of the breach.

Android 9 Pie update now rolling out to Nokia 7 Plus

Nokia 7 Plus colors

Android 9 Pie is now making its way to another device.

HMD Global today confirmed that it's pushing an Android 9 Pie update to the Nokia 7 Plus. The rollout will be phased to ensure that everything works smoothly, and only the first 10 percent of the install base will get the update initially, so that means that it may take some time for the update to hit your device. The update will hit open markets first, followed up operators that require an update approval process.

The update to Android 9 Pie is a big one, bringing with it many new features. A new gesture-based navigation system aims to help you move around Android more naturally, and Adaptive Battery learns the apps that you use most and prioritizes the battery for them. Other notable new features of Android 9 Pie include a refreshed Quick Settings menu, better notification management, and a bettery way to take screenshots.

There aren't many devices outside of Google's Pixel phones that have been updated to Android 9 Pie, so this update for the Nokia 7 Plus is notable. HMD Global has been pretty good about getting Android OS and security updates to its devices in a timely manner, and that trend continues with this update for the Nokia 7 Plus.

OnePlus begins teasing OnePlus 6T

OnePlus 6T teaser logo

The OnePlus 6T is coming soon, and OnePlus today posted its first teaser for the device.

A brief video posted to the official OnePlus Twitter page shows a hexagon with the letter "T" in it followed by the phrase "Unlock the Future". The clip, which may be teasing the OnePlus 6T's in-display fingerprint reader, ends with the logo for the OnePlus 6T.

Considering that we've seen several OnePlus 6T leaks in recent weeks, it shouldn't come as a surprise that the device is coming soon. Still, it's nice to get confirmation from OnePlus that the 6T is near.

OnePlus has confirmed that its next phone will have an in-display fingerprint sensor and that it will ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack. Meanwhile, the rumor mill has supplied us with leaked renders of the device, showing a phone with a significantly smaller display notch than the one on the OnePlus 6.

Facebook says it was hacked, nearly 50 million accounts affected

Facebook app Android

Heads up, Facebook users, because the mega social network was recently the victim of a hack.

Facebook announced today that on September 25th, its engineering team found that hackers exploited a vulnerability in Facebook code with the "View As" feature, which lets you see what your profile looks like to other people. The malicious party stole access tokens that could be used to take over users' accounts.

The issue affected nearly 50 million accounts. Facebook says that it has reset the access tokens to all of the accounts that it knows were affected, and it's also taking the precautionary step to reset the access tokens for another 40 million accounts that have been subject to a "View As" look-up in the last year. If your account is one of these 90 million, you'll need to log back in to Facebook and any apps that use Facebook Login. After logging back in, you'll get a notification explaining what happened.

Facebook says that because it's only just started its investigation into the incident, it doesn't yet know if the affected accounts were misued or if any user information was access. It's also unclear who was behind the attack.

Facebook has fixed the vulnerability and informed law enforcement about the situation. Additionally, Facebook is temporarily disabling the "View As" feature while it conducts a security review.

Facebook security issue affecting 50 million people would have let hackers login to your account

Facebook this morning disclosed a widespread security flaw that could have allowed hackers or other malicious third parties to access an affected users account by gleaning their security token. The flaw affected as many as 50 million people, and Facebook says it’s forcibly making around 90 million users log back into their accounts in full today to be safe. It also says its fixed the issue and alerted law enforcement, indicating this may not have been an accidental engineering mistake, but a purposeful exploit discovered and potentially used by some third party organization or hacker.

The company says its engineering team was made aware of the issue on September 25th, but Guy Rosen, Facebook’s vice president of product management, says...

Titanium RED Hydrogen One delayed, pre-order customers get free aluminum model

RED Hydrogen One official

We got another update on the RED Hydrogen One this week, and unfortunately, it's not good news.

RED founder Jim Jannard says that the first run of the titanium Hydrogen One "is a disaster" and "all fail". Jannard adds that while all of RED's cameras are made in California where the company has control over the manufacturing process, that's not the case with the Hydrogen One. "We are left to rely on the schedules and representations of our suppliers. In this case... we were let down pretty severly," he explains.

In order to make up for this delay of the titanium RED Hydrogen One, Jannard says that all pre-order customers who selected a titanium model will receive an aluminum RED Hydrogen One when that model begins shipping. And when the titanium versions are being made correctly, those pre-order customers will get their device. Those folks will be able to keep both phones.

The titanium version of the RED Hydrogen One is the pricier version of the phone, coming in at a price of $1,595. Customers who pre-ordered the device paid for it more than one year ago, and so it's understandable that some may be frustrated that they now have to wait longer for their device. In exchange for the added wait, though, those folks are getting a second phone for free while they wait for their titanium model to come, which seems like a pretty good way to make up for the issue.

Wear OS update with updated UI is now rolling out

Wear OS 2.1 update smartwatches

Remember that Wear OS update that we told you about last month? Well, it looks like it's now rolling out.

Wear OS 2.1 is now rolling out to compatible smartwatches. To check if there's an update available for your watch, go into Settings > System > About > System updates on your smartwatch.

This update brings with it a big change on how you'll navigate your Wear OS smartwatch. You can now swipe in four directions to quickly access different parts of your watch. For example, swiping up from the watch face will let you jump to your notifications, and swiping down will get you to your Quick Settings where you'll find toggles for things like Airplane Mode, Google Pay, and Do Not Disturb.

Swipe right on the watch face and you'll find Google Assistant, which displays info to help you get ready for your day. This includes the date, temperature, upcoming meetings, and even if there's a delay on your commute. Finally, swiping left will get you to Google Fit, where you'll find your Heart Points and Move Minutes and also be able to quickly start a new workout.

Wear OS 2.1 sounds like a nice update that should make using your smartwatch a better experience. If you've got a Wear OS watch on your wrist, go check to see if the update is available for you!

Razer Phone 2 appears in leaked image

Razer logo

With less than two weeks to go before Razer's official Razer Phone 2 reveal, the device has leaked out in a clear image.

The Razer Phone 2 looks largely similar to the original Razer Phone, with squared off corners and front-facing speakers. There's a logo on the back of the Razer Phone 2 that lights up, says Evan Blass, and we can see what looks like a USB-C port on the bottom of the phone.

The one big change with the Razer Phone 2, at least when it comes to design, is that the dual rear camera setup has been moved to a spot directly above the Razer logo.

Razer is hosting an event for the Razer Phone 2 on October 10th. There haven't been any concrete spec leaks for the device quite yet, but considering that the original model is a high-end gaming phone, we'll likely get something similar with the Razer Phone 2. Expect features like a Snapdragon 845 and the return of the 128Hz display.

Google Pixel 3 XL shown off in high-quality hands-on video

Earlier today we got another look at the Pixel 3 thanks to some leaked Google marketing videos, and now some video of the Pixel 3 XL has leaked, too.

A lengthy hands-on video that shows the Google Pixel 3 XL has been shared by Rozetked. The clip is in Russian, but there are English subtitles available. It's a high-quality video that's available in 4K and gives us a look at the Pixel 3 hardware from multiple angles. There's a comparison with a Pixel 2 XL in there, too.

The presenter describes some details of the Pixel 3 XL in this video, saying that it's an attractive, well-made device. The screen quality is an upgrade from the Pixel 3 XL, but the presenter isn't a fan of the notch at the top of the display.

There's not a ton of new information revealed by this latest Pixel 3 XL leak, but it does give us another great look at Google's upcoming flagship. It's also nice to see the Pixel 3 XL compared to the Pixel 2 XL because it helps give us a better idea about the size and looks of the new, unreleased phone compared to the current one that many of us have in our pockets.

As for what's included, this is a smaller update, which you might've guessed since it's an x.x.1 release. This update fixes an issue that caused a "small number of users" to see increased exercise minutes as well as an issue that caused some Apple Watch owners to note get Stand credit in the afternoon. Google rolling out new features to make your trip planning easier

Google Your Trips saved search

Google wants to help you plan your next trip, and so it's rolling out new features to do just that.

Google's Your Trips will gain new features in October to help you organize your travel plans. For example, if you've started looking at information about a trip to Milan, Google will show potential trip information in the Your Trips section like flight prices you might be tracking, destination-specific flight and hotel searches, and places you've saved.

Google Flights Christmas New Year's pricing

Google Flights is getting improved, too. The feature already works to show you if a flight price you're looking at for Thanksgiving is a good deal, and now Google is expanding this to include flight information for December holidays like Christmas and New Year's. Google will also notify you if prices aren't going to drop or are likely to rise in the next five days. These features will roll out in the coming weeks.

Google Your Trips hotel rating

Finally, a new hotel location score will summarize the neighborhood that a hotel is located in This feature will use info from Google Maps to tell you if a hotel is near things to do like bars, landmarks, and public transportation. You'll also get info on getting to and from airports.

Planning a trip can be pretty stressful, as you've got to juggle a lot of different information and search for things to do and places to go in an unfamiliar city. With these new features, you can focus more on having fun planning your trip rather than worrying about finding the best flight price or the best hotel.

Microsoft is ending support for Skype Classic on November 1st

The company announced the change on the Skype blog today, telling users that, “Although you may be able to use older versions for a little while, we encourage you to update today to avoid any interruption.”

The Skype saga has been one of the more contentious for the Windows maker over the course of the last couple of years. Would you buy a new, updated HTC G1?

HTC G1

You may have seen a few people talking about an anniversary recently. Specifically, the fact that Android is now 10 years old. A decade ago we got our first look at the G1, which was manufactured by HTC. Some folks might know it as the T-Mobile G1, because that's the exclusivity deal the magenta network had back then.

If you wanted to jump on the Android bandwagon way back then in the U.S., you had to be using T-Mobile. Officially.

I did just that when the G1 launched. I don't even remember which carrier I was using before that, but I was ready to make the switch and try out the newest platform on the market. I could tell immediately that it felt more like test software rather than a product for the public, but I didn't mind. It was pretty awesome to be using something like Android way back when.

The only reason I switched away from the G1 and went back to a Windows Mobile device was because where I lived was a pretty awful market for T-Mobile at the time, so staying on the network wasn't an option.

Seeing the images of the G1 in all its glory kicked in some serious nostalgia for me. Which got me wondering about physical keyboards and slider designs in 2018. We are obviously well established in our big displays and minimal bezel designs these days, and we've seen handsets like BlackBerry's own Android efforts fail to really catch on.

But what about a new, updated G1? What if the bezels could be minimized around the display just as we've come to expect from our smartphones these days, and we obviously really wouldn't need the big area where the trackball and physical buttons were placed. So that would be a lot of display that could be moved up to reveal a physical keyboard.

I'd say it could even spin around, but that's probably a bit too much like the SideKick. We had some crazy (and fun) designs back then!

I don't know if a new G1, or a new Sidekick for that matter, would really grab the public's attention at all. It probably wouldn't. But seeing the old handset again after such a long time has me wondering "what if?" So I'm going to go ahead and lob the question over to you. Would you buy an updated G1 if it ever happened?

Google Pixel 3 marketing videos leak, show off features of the upcoming flagship

Google Pixel 3 image leak

There's been a steady stream of Google PIxel 3 and Pixel 3 XL leaks coming out ahead of the devices' official unveiling on October 9th, and today we've got another to add to the list.

The latest Pixel 3 leak shows off the smaller of the two handsets in some Google marketing materials. This includes a series of marketing videos that demonstrate how to use the Pixel 3. There are some features that many folks will likely already know about, like how to add an app to your home screen, but there are some interesting details included as well.

The video shows the user placing a business card in front of the Pixel 3 with its camera app open. The user then taps the email address on the business card, which brings up a prompt that the user then taps to open Gmail and begin an email to that address. Another notable feature shown in the video is a user highlighting the name of a restaurant in an email in the Gmail app, then the Pixel 3 recognizing that it's a restaurant name and offering a "Reserve" shortcut that sends the user to OpenTable to make a reservation.

Other features shown in this video include using the Quick Settings menu, scrolling down on the rear fingerprint reader to pull down the notification shade, and squeezing the sides of the Pixel 3 to launch Google Assistant.

We've seen a lot of details on the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL leak in recent months, but it's still worth getting excited about Google's October 9th event. Not only will we finally get the full spec list, launch date, and pricing info for the new phones, but it'll be interesting to see how Google improves the camera performance on the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL after the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL have become some of the best-performing cameras in the smartphone market.

Evidence of the upgraded Oppo Find X was found inside the TENAA database, which is like China's version of the FCC. It hasn't been officially announced by Oppo yet, so it's unclear when the new Find X might launch or how much it'll cost when it does.

We've already seen several smartphones come to market with 8GB of RAM, including the OnePlus 6 and Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, so it was only a matter of time before a phone with 10GB of RAM came along. And while Oppo may be the first company to launch a phone with 10GB of RAM, it won't be the last, as the smartphone market is in a specs race where companies are always trying to one-up each other to make their products stand out.

Do you want a smartphone with 10GB of RAM as your next daily driver?

Oppo's Find X could be the first phone with 10GB of RAM

Considering all the attention that's been heaped on the Oppo Find X's pop-up selfie camera, you'd be forgiven for thinking the upcoming handset is a one-trick pony. But a new variant of the flagship has popped up on Chinese phone regulator Tenaa's site with another ace up its sleeve: a whopping 10GB of RAM and 256 GB of ROM.

Samsung's Galaxy Note 9 gets two new colors in the US

When Samsung's excellent Galaxy Note 9 launched in the US earlier this year, it came in some... shall we say, unconventional colors. It's not often that a massive, sales-focused company moves past safe options in favor of lilac and ocean blue, but whatever -- we appreciate gutsy moves around here and the phones looked great.

Facebook test lets users add songs to photos and videos

Starting next week, some Facebook users will see the option to add songs to their photo and video posts. The social network first mentioned that it's working on a feature that will allow you to add an appropriate soundtrack to your media posts when it announced Lip Sync Live. That time, though, the option was supposed to be exclusive to Stories -- the platform has decided to expand its scope and will now test the feature on both Stories and News Feed.

Nintendo’s gacha RPG ‘Dragalia Lost’ arrives on mobiles

Nintendo's new mobile game Dragalia Lost has landed on iOS and Android in the US, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau. The game boasts all the hallmarks of a Japanese RPG made by gacha specialists Cygames: turn-based action (check), anime-style characters (check), microtransactions galore (check), and dragons (check). Of course, you can opt not to spend any cash on in-game characters and dragons -- which you can morph into during battle -- and just grind it out instead.

LG confirms V40 ThinQ features, including 6.4-inch screen and triple rear camera setup

LG is hosting an event for the V40 ThinQ on October 3rd, but the company has decided to drop a few details about its upcoming flagship ahead of that date.

LG today confirmed that the V40 ThinQ will have a triple rear camera setup, even sharing a couple photos of the three cameras. We can see what appears to be a flash to the right of the three rear cameras as well as a fingerprint reader below it.

Also included in LG's new teaser are a bunch of references to the number five and an image that shows five cameras. That seems to suggest that the V40 ThinQ will have five cameras in total, just like the rumors suggested, with three on the back and two on the front.

Another detail confirmed by LG today is the V40 ThinQ's screen size. The LG V40 ThinQ will have a 6.4-inch screen, up from the 6-inch panel found on last year's LG V30. Unfortunately, LG hasn't gone into any other details about the screen, so we don't have info like the display resolution quite yet.

Finally, LG says that the V40 ThinQ will be available in three colors: Platinum Gray, Carmine Red, and Moroccan Blue.

LG's V series smartphones have always placed a focus on camera performance, so it's not a huge surprise to learn that LG is going big with cameras on the V40 ThinQ and placing five of them on the device. We'll have to wait a bit longer for confirmation on what exactly the cameras' features are, but rumors have suggested that the triple rear camera setup will include a standard sensor, a super wide angle lens, and a telephoto camera.

LG V40 unveiled with all five of its cameras

We'll get our hands on the LG V40 ThinQ October 3rd, but in Korea the company has partially lifted the curtain on its latest V-series phone. While the line has grown more conventional since the release of the V10 a few years ago, this one separates itself from the pack by bringing the previously-rumored five cameras -- three in the back and two up front.

FCC seeks $37.5 million fine on firm that spoofed consumer numbers

The FCC is looking to fine an Arizona-based company $37.5 million for making spoofed telemarketing calls. The company, Affordable Enterprises of Arizona, made more than 2.3 million calls over the course of 14 months, often masking its own number with those of consumers in the area. The FCC says this is the first major action taken against a company involved in such a practice. While the commission has issued robocall fines before, in those cases, the numbers spoofed were often ones not currently in use.

YouTube app for iOS adds HDR for iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max

iPhone XS Max hands-on

iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max owners, the YouTube app is getting an update this week to get better for you and your new phones.

Google has updated its YouTube app for iOS to add HDR support for the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. The feature is included as part of version 13.37 of the YouTube app, which you should be able to grab from the App Store right now.

Once you've updated, find a video that includes HDR — like this one here — and then tap the Quality button and select an option with HDR.

The YouTube app for iOS added HDR support for the iPhone X back in May, but it looks like Google wasn't able to add HDR support for the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max in time for the devices' launch last week. The wait for HDR didn't turn out to be long, though, and now iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max owners can enjoy HDR YouTube videos on their phones. The highest resolution video you'll be able to get is 1080p, which is kind of disappointing, but that's due to Apple's lack of support for the VP9 codec.
