AT&T's 5G network launches today

Just four days into the year 2018, AT&T said it would launch mobile 5G service before the year was up. Today the carrier fulfilled its commitment.

AT&T's mobile 5G service is now live in 12 U.S. cities. Those include parts of Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Houston, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Louisville, Oklahoma City, New Orleans, Raleigh, San Antonio, and Waco. AT&T's 5G network uses mmWave spectrum and is called 5G+.

Of course, 5G service doesn't do much good if you don't have a device that can access it. AT&T is launching the Netgear Nighthawk 5G Mobile Hotspot alongside its 5G network, letting you access those 5G airwaves and spit them out as a Wi-Fi signal to give others devices an internet connection.

The Netgear Nighthawk 5G Mobile Hotspot will launch on December 21. It'll be available to select businesses and consumers with 5G service at no charge for 90 days, but AT&T says the device will be available more widely in spring 2019. Pricing will be set at $499 upfront and $70 per month for 15GB of 5G data usage.

Finally, AT&T says that it's planning to roll out its mobile 5G coverage in more cities in the first half of 2019. This includes parts of Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Nashville, Orlando, San Diego, San Francisco, and San Jose. The carrier has also committed to launching two Samsung smartphones with 5G in 2019, with one coming in the spring and the other arriving in the second half of the year with support for both mmWave and sub-6GHz spectrum.
