How smart is your home?

Apple HomeKit

Recently, I was scanning through Twitter and I saw, in passing, that someone thinks people don't want smart home products. I was doing something else at the time, looking for a different tweet, but that statement has stuck with me. Mostly because I can't help but think it's not true, at least not in a broad sense. That person might not want smart home products, but I can safely say that I know at least a dozen people who have put some form of smart, connected technology into their home.

And many of them have plans to keep adding more.

A close friend of mine has a variety of different products in his house. He's got a doorbell that has a camera attached to it, and then an extraconnected camera above the door, so it gets a better viewpoint of the front porch area, as well. Both of them offer a quick video feed so he can see what's going on outside his place whenever he wants. He's got a smart lock on several doors so he can keep tabs on what's locked and unlocked.

His thermostat can be controlled from his phone, as can his fans, lights, and more. Basically, he wants a home where if he can control something with his phone, or tablet, he'll make it happen. He's a fan of the smart home idea, one could say.

As for me? I have yet to jump on board. But I'm not of the same thinking as the source of the tweet I mentioned earlier. I don't have any reason to think people don't want smart homes, whether that's just a little detail here and there, like having lightbulbs you can change colors on the fly, or having a whole house decked out. One of these days I'll have something more than just a smart speaker in my house, but I'm not necessarily in any kind of rush, either.

I think it might help that there are so many different options out there, too. From the little thing to the big one, it all comes down to what type of devices you want in your home. I don't think smart home devices have been "all the rage" like we've seen with, say, smartwatches, which seemed to burn out just as fast as they became popular. The smart home has more room to grow, with a lot more options, platforms, and what not.

So, what about you? How smart is your home? Have you already jumped on the smart home train and outfitted your place with a variety of different options? Or are you taking it slow in adoption, if you're adopting at all? Let me know!
