Six months after introducing the Xperia XZ2, Sony has followed it up with the Xperia XZ3.
The big change with the Xperia XZ3 is its screen. Sony has equipped the Xperia XZ3 with a 6-inch 2880x1440 OLED display, while the Xperia XZ2 has a 5.7-inch 2160x1080 LCD screen. One thing that the display on the Xperia XZ3 has in common with the screen on the Xperia XZ2 is its HDR support.
Sony has also upgraded the front-facing camera on the Xperia XZ3, bumping it up from a 5MP sensor on the Xperia XZ2 to a 13MP camera with wide angle lens. The battery has been beefed up, too, going form 3180mAh on the Xperia XZ2 to 3330mAh on the Xperia XZ3. And finally, while the has committed to updating the Xperia XZ2 to Android 9 Pie later this year, the Xperia XZ3 will ship with Android 9 Pie in tow.
The rest of the Xperia XZ3's feature set is about what you'd expect from a high-end Android phone in 2018. There's a Snapdragon 845 processor inside its IP68 water and dust-resistant shell along with 4GB of RAM, 64GB of built-in storage, and a microSD card slot. The back of the Xperia XZ3 is home to a fingerprint reader and a 19MP camera with 4K video capture and 960fps super slow motion video recording.
Oh, and like many other recent flagships, there's no 3.5mm headphone jack to be found here. There is USB-C, wireless charging, and front-facing speakers, though.
The Sony Xperia XZ3 will begin rolling out in select markets at the end of September 2018 at a price of £699/$900.
It's kind of strange to see Sony release an upgrade version of a flagship that it announced just six months ago, but the Xperia XZ3 does look like a nice upgrade from the XZ2. The screen is the major improvement here, getting bigger, higher-res, and going OLED, but the front-facing camera has gotten a nice upgrade for better selfies, too, and it's great to see a device that'll ship with Android 9 Pie.
