Samsung offering free Gear VR adapter to Galaxy Note 9 owners

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Ocean Blue

Samsung's Gear VR headsets work with several of the company's Galaxy smartphones, but it looks like Galaxy Note 9 owners will need a special adapter to use their phone for virtual reality.

Samsung has announced that it's offering a free adapter to owners of both the Gear VR and the Galaxy Note 9 that'll enable them to use the Note 9 in the Gear VR. The company explains that "due to the increased size of the Note9", an adapter is required to use the new phone in the Gear VR headset.

To get a free adapter, you'll need a Galaxy Note 9 and a Gear VR model SM-R325. You'll then need to call 1-800-SAMSUNG and have your Gear VR model and serial number ready. Once you complete that process, Samsung will ship you an adapter free of charge. You can expect to get your free adapter in 7-10 business days.

The Galaxy Note 9 isn't that much larger than the Galaxy Note 8, with the Note 9 measuring 162.5 x 74.8 x 8.6mm while the Note 8 is 161.9 x 76.4 x 8.8mm. Apparently that small size difference is enough to require an adapter to use for Samsung's current Gear VR headset, though. Good on Samsung for giving out a free adapter to Gear VR and Note 9 owners so that they can use their new Note for virtual reality rather than making them pay for an adapter or even a new headset just because they bought a new phone.
