Google says no Pixel Watch launching this year

LG Watch Style hands-on review

Rumors have suggested that we'll see new Pixel phones, new Pixel earbuds, and a new Pixelbook from Google later this year, but one device that we won't get to meet is a Google smartwatch.

Google has confirmed that it has no plans to launch a Pixel Watch this year. Miles Barr, Google's director of engineering for Wear OS, has told Tom's Guide that Google's focus is on its partners:

“To think of a one-size-fits-all watch, I don’t think we’re there yet. Our focus is on our partners for now.”

This news is surely disappointing to a lot of Android fans who love Google's Pixel line of products. A rumor from earlier this year claimed that Google would launch a Pixel Watch in 2018, so it's possible that the product was in the works but got delayed or canceled. The good news for Wear OS fans is that it looks like Qualcomm will soon introduce a new smartwatch processor, which should bring with it a wave of new watches.

Later in the interview, Barr teased what he thinks a Pixel Watch would look like if Google were to release one. "Our Google Pixel line of phones is the best experience and Google’s take on it, so I imagine we would focus heavily on the [Google] Assistant to integrate AI and machine learning into the device, which is Google’s forte," he explained. What would you like to see in a Pixel Watch?
