AT&T is expanding its 5G Evolution service in a big way.

AT&T today announced that its 5G Evolution coverage is now live in parts of 117 new markets today, bringing the total number of markets with the coverage to 141. You can find a full list of the new markets at the bottom of this post, but some of the big names include Los Angeles, CA; Miami, FL; Louisville, KY; Boston, MA: and San Antonio, TX.

AT&T says that it plans to launch 5G Evolution in more than 500 markets later this year, including parts of Baltimore, MD; Portland, OR; and Seattle, WA.

While it has "5G" in the name, 5G Evolution isn't technically 5G. It utilizes 4G LTE network technologies like 4x4 MIMO, 256 QAM, and carrier aggregation to give you faster download speeds, so long as you've got a compatible handset.

AT&T devices that are compatible with 5G Evolution include the Galaxy S8 and S8+, Galaxy S9 and S9+, Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S8 Active, LG V30, and Moto Z2 Force Edition.

One other detail announced by AT&T today is that it has launched LTE License Assisted Access (LAA) in parts of Boston, MA; Sacramento, CA; and McAllen, TX. LTE-LAA is now available in parts of 7 markets, and AT&T plans to enable LTE-LAA in at least 24 markets this year.

LTE-LAA is an LTE uses unlicensed 5GHz spectrum along with LTE coverage to offer faster data speeds.
