Motorola confirms that it's working on a foldable phone

Motorola foldable RAZR patent filing

Recent rumors have suggested that Motorola has a foldable phone in the works, and today the company confirmed that that is the case.

Dan Dery, Motorola's VP of Global Product, has confirmed that Moto has a foldable phone coming. "We started to work on foldables a long time ago," Dery told Engadget. "And we have been doing a lot of iteration." Dery went on to add that Motorola "has no intention of coming later than everybody else in the market."

The Motorola exec went on to say that Moto has been trialing a plastic OLED device with plastic film on top. He then seemed to hint that a Motorola foldable would not have a design with a screen on its outside, like the Huawei Mate X, saying that you would "have something that is very rapidly not usable" with a screen on the outside that could easily get scratched.

Recent patent filings suggest that Motorola is working on a foldable phone with a design similar to the old RAZR flip phone. The patent drawings suggest that the phone could have a clamshell body that you open up to reveal one large foldable screen on the outside. A smaller display on the outside of the screen, like for notifications, is also possible.

Rumors have said that this upcoming Motorola foldable could launch at Verizon with a price tag that may be as high as $1,500. That sounded a bit high when we first heard that rumor earlier this year, but now that the $1,980 Samsung Galaxy Fold and the $2,600 Huawei Mate X have been revealed, that rumored $1,500 price for Motorola's foldable doesn't seem nearly as crazy.
