Facebook Messenger update rolling out with simplified design

Facebook Messenger is getting a makeover.

Facebook is now rolling out Messenger 4, an updated version of the messaging app that Facebook says is simplified. The app is making its way to users beginning today and will roll out globally over the coming weeks.

As for what's new, Facebook says that it's reduced the number of tabs in Messenger from nine to three: Chats, People, and Discover. Chats is where your chat threads will live, while People will help you find friends, see who's active, and view your friends' Stories. The Discover tab will be home to Instant Games, let you follow news, connect with businesses, and more.

Messenger is also getting a bit more personal with color gradients. This feature will let you use multiple colors to customize your chat bubbles in conversations, and as you scroll through a conversation, you'll see the colors change. Color gradients can be changed at any time.

Facebook has even more new features coming soon to Messenger, like a Dark Mode that'll be released in the near future.

Messenger 4 looks like a solid update to Facebook's popular messaging app. It's recently become pretty cluttered with lots of features, buttons, tabs, and more vying for your attention, but it sounds like Facebook is trying to cut some of that to make it easier to use Messenger for its main purpose: chatting.

What do you think of this new-look Facebook Messenger?
