The new Palm companion phone is launching next week.
Verizon confirmed today that the new Palm phone will be available starting November 2. As a reminder, pricing will be set at $14.58 per month for 24 months, $299.99 with a two-year contract, or $349.99 full retail price. Also of note is that you will need an existing Verizon smartphone to link the Palm phone to; you can't use the device on its own.
This Palm phone uses Verizon's NumberShare service, which links your existing phone number to the Palm phone. That means that you can leave your main smartphone at home and still get your calls, texts, and anything synced with your Gmail account on your Palm phone. Verizon NumberShare costs $10 per month.
The tiny Palm phone features a 3.3-inch HD LCD screen, Gorilla Glass 3 on its front and rear, and an aluminum mid-frame. There's a 12MP rear camera on the device as well as an 8MP front-facing camera for selfies. Inside is an octa-core Snapdragon 435 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and an 800mAh battery that Palm says will get you "all-day use" with Life Mode and typical usage. The Palm phone is also IP68 water and dust resistant and is compatible with Android and iOS devices.
On the software side, the Palm phone runs Android 8.1 and includes access to the Play Store for downloading Android apps. The side button on the phone can be double-pressed to launch Google Assistant, and Palm has partnered with Fleksy to create a custom keyboard that offers both gestures and voice-to-text. Also of note is the Life Mode feature, which will silence your incoming calls and notifications when the screen is off unless you're on a clal, streaming music, or using GPS. Wkae up the screen and your alerts will turn back on.
The purpose of the Palm phone is to let you leave your big phone at home while still being available to communicate with others and be connected if the need arises. This way, you can try to pay more attention to what's around you and what you're doing. There are some connected smartwatches that let you get your calls and alerts when you're away from your main phone, but the Palm phone offers a bit more functionality, giving you access to Android apps as well as a couple of cameras.
Now that we know its launch date, are you thinking about picking up this Palm companion phone?
