Google News app for Android consuming gigabytes of data in the background

Normally you don't think of news apps being particularly hungry for data, but a bug with the Google News app is making its hunger for gigabytes insatiable.

Several users of Google News for Android say that the app is using gigs and gigs of data while in the background, even if the "Download via Wi-Fi" setting is enabled. Folks on the Google News Help Forum and Reddit have complained about the issue, with complaints going back to August.

The amount of data used by the app varies, but some of the more extreme cases show it using 18GB, 20GB, and even 28GB of data in a single month. Many people say that this issue has caused them to pay data overage fees, too.

Google responded to the issue at the end of September, saying that "the relevant teams are currently investigating and working towards a fix." However, it doesn't look like there have been any more updates from Google since.

While unlimited data plans have become more widespread recently, there are still a lot of folks out there on limited data plans. Not only is this Google News bug a major issue because it's using up all of these folks' data while in the background, but in many cases it's costing them money due to overage fees. If you've got the Google News app for Android and you want to avoid this issue, you may want to disable background data for the app or even delete it entirely until Google issues a fix.
