Six months after launching its first gaming phone, Xiaomi is back for round two.
The Black Shark Helo is now official as Xiaomi's latest gaming smartphone. The new Black Shark shares several features with the original model, including its Snapdragon 845 processor and dual rear camera setup with 12MP and 20 MP sensors, and it's got the same 4000mAh battery, too. There are some upgrades worth taking note of, though.
With the Black Shark Helo, buyers can now get up to 10GB of RAM and up to 256GB of built-in storage, up from a max of 8GB and 128GB, respectively, on the previous model. There's a slightly larger 6.01-inch 2160x1080 display that's now AMOLED rather than LCD, and Xiaomi touts that there's a color RGB lighting effect on the back of the phone that can offer 16.8 million color options.
Other notable features of the Black Shark Helo include a 20MP front-facing camera, rear fingerprint reader, and dual front-facing speakers. And because this is a gaming phone, there's a one-click Shark mode to help optimize performance for gaming as well as a cooling system to help keep your Helo cool during intense gaming sessions.
Xiaomi is also prepping a couple of gaming-focused accessories for the Black Shark Helo. One is a Nintendo Joy-Con-like controller for your left hand to give you physical buttons for better control during your gaming sessions, while the other is a second Joy-Con-like controller for your right hand that adds a touchpad and some additional buttons.
The Black Shark Helo is launching in China with pricing starting at 3,199 CNY ($461 USD) for the 6GB/128GB model and going up to 3,499 CNY ($504 USD) for the 8GB/128GB version. The maxed out 10GB/256GB model will launch in December for 4,199 CNY ($605 USD).
While it's not a huge upgrade over its predecessor, the Black Shark Helo has some nice improvements and appears to offer just about everything you'd want from a gaming smartphone in 2018. And like most other Xiaomi phones, it's priced pretty competitively. The bad news is that also like most other Xiaomi phones, many of us likely won't ever get to use the Black Shark Helo.
