Google Glass makes return with updated Enterprise Edition model

Google Glass Enterprise Edition official

One month after the original Google Glass got an unexpected software update, an all-new Google Glass model has been revealed.

Google Glass is back with Glass Enterprise Edition, a new version of Alphabet’s smart headwear that’s focused on the workplace. This updated Glass Enterprise Edition offers better Wi-Fi compared to the original model as well as a faster processor and extended battery life. Its camera has been upgraded from 5 megapixels to 8 megapixels, too, and there’s now a red light that comes on when the camera is recording video.

Alphabet says that it’s been working with select partners to test Glass Enterprise Edition over the past couple of years, adding that the results have been positive. GE mechanics use Glass to view instructions with images and animations, which has increased efficiency since they no longer have to stop work to check their binders. DHL says that Glass has increased supply chain efficiency by 15 percent because workers now get real-time instructions about where to place items, complete with visual aids.

Glass Enterprise Edition is now in use at more than 50 companies, and Alphabet says that it’s now making the device available to even more businesses through its partner program. There’s no word on how much the new model of Glass costs.

The original Google Glass was a neat idea, but it failed to catch on with the public, probably at least in part due to its $1500 price tag. Glass seems suited for work, though, with large companies that can afford to pay for the hardware and employees that can benefit from having a display in their sight and their hands free. Unfortunately for Glass fans, there’s no mention of a public release for this updated model, so you’ll have to get a job at GE, DHL, Volkswagen, or one of the other Glass partners if you want to try it out.
