Today, Samsung officially announced the Galaxy Folder 2. It's a flip phone, which will be available in South Korea for 297,000 won, or about $260. It'll be available in pink or black, and while it's certainly not the next high-end flagship phone to drool over, it doesn't look to be a slouch, either. Samsung is even offering two versions of the device, one that is an LTE model and another that is a 3G version.
Let's run over those specs real quick: a 3.8-inch display, 2GB of RAM, a battery that measures in at 1950mAh, Android Nougat on board, and a 1.4GHz quad-core processor. It also supports a microSD card up to 256GB. It has a slightly larger keypad when compared to the original Galaxy Folder, too, which should be a welcomed change.
It also has several different physical keys dedicated to different functions, including "contact," "text," and the camera app. There is also a dedicated button for social networks, which owners will be able to map to launch their favorite social media apps. So Samsung is putting that physical keyboard to good use.
Samsung is not shy about selling this phone to "middle-aged people," with features like distinct ringtones and even increasing the volume of the phone from 11 to 13 just to make sure those "middle-aged people" can hear the phone when it's calling out to them.
But I think the phone might suit a broader spectrum of customers.
I showed a picture of the Galaxy Folder 2 to a friend of mine who has told me on multiple occasions that he misses flip phones. While I can't say I agree with the sentiment in general, I do genuinely miss the more extravagantly-designed phones of those good ol' days. Remember when phones twisted around and what not? Ah, memories.
In any event, I showed him the phone and he asked me when he could buy one. I told him he'd have to visit South Korea, and unfortunately that dashed his dreams a bit, but with 20 years to go before he reaches the middle-aged range, I'd imagine that there are others out there around his age that would be willing to pick up the Galaxy Folder 2 as well.
Especially with a cheap enough price tag attached to it. At $260 it's much cheaper than the flagship phones out there --including even the latest handset from OnePlus-- so it could be a pretty solid backup phone, just in case. Or, if you're like my friend, the perfect daily driver.
My friend asked me if I think Samsung will bring the device to markets outside of South Korea, and while I said a Chinese launch isn't impossible, I added that we probably wouldn't see it in the U.S. Which is a real bummer, because while I can admit that it (probably) wouldn't sell like hot cakes, I can't help but think Samsung would see some sales. Maybe even enough to warrant its availability.
I think I might even try it out.
But, what better way to find out than by asking all of you? With the specs that the Galaxy Folder 2 has, and the cheap price tag along with it, would you consider picking it up if Samsung launched it in the U.S. (or other international markets, for that matter)? Would you switch back to flip phones? Let me know!
