Moto Z2 Play official with thinner body, Verizon and unlocked models planned

Yesterday, Motorola teased that it had a “bold phone” to announce on June 1st. Now we know exactly what phone Moto was referring to.

The Moto Z2 Play is now official. While the new device may look similar to the original Moto Z Play, there are some differences to be aware of.

Moto’s Z2 Play is a full millimeter thinner than its predecessor, measuring in at 5.99mm thick. Also smaller is the battery on the Moto Z2 Play, coming in at 3000mAh, compared to the 3510mAh battery on the Moto Z Play. The Moto Z2 Play does support TurboPower charging, which should get you up to 8 hours of power in 15 minutes.

The Moto Z2 Play is also packing a 12-megapixel 1.4um Dual Autofocus Pixel camera, which includes an f/1.7 aperture, Laser Autofocus, Phase Detection Autofocus, and an LED flash. The original Moto Z Play had a 16-megapixel 1.3um camera.

Rounding out the Moto Z2 Play’s spec list is a 5.5-inch 1920x1080 Super AMOLED display, octa-core Snapdragon 626 processor, 3/4GB of RAM, 32/64GB of storage, microSD slot, 5-megapixel front-facing camera, NFC, FM radio, USB-C, and a fingerprint reader that can also be used for navigation on your phone’s software. You can swipe left to  go back, right to go to your recent apps, tap to go home, and long press to lock your phone. Support for Moto Mods is included, too.

On the software side, the Moto Z2 Play comes with Android 7.1.1 Nougat. It also includes custom Moto software features like Moto Voice for launching apps and Night Display that will reduce blue light on your screen in the evenings, as some have suggested that the blue light can disrupt your sleep.

The Moto Z2 Play is launching in Brazil Today for R$ 1,999 and will continue to be released around the globe starting this month. In the US, the Moto Z2 Play is launching at Verizon this summer and will also be available unlocked from Motorola this summer for $499.

So that’s the new Moto Z2 Play. It looks like it’s got some nice improvements over its predecessor, as Moto is touting that its camera has better low light performance, and there’s also an updated processor and a 4GB RAM model. The smaller battery is likely going to disappoint some folks, especially since the original Moto Z Play was known for its battery life. We’ll have to wait and see what the battery life on the new model is like before making any judgments, though.

What do you think of the new Moto Z2 Play?
