Google Play Movies & TV gains HDR playback

Google Play Movies & TV logo official

Google Play Movies & TV is getting a nifty new feature today.

Google has announced that Google Play Movies & TV now supports HDR playback. Only select movies will support HDR playback, like Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Mad Max: Fury Road. Additionally HDR playback is only available in the U.S. and Canada at launch.

With HDR, you’ll get images that have a wider range of brightness and color. You will need a TV that supports HDR playback in order to get the feature, though. If you’ve got an HDR-capable TV and get a HDR-enabled movie from Google Play Movies & TV, you’ll automatically receive the HDR content.

Google also notes that Chromecast Ultra supports HDR playback when connected to an HDR-capable TV.

While not everyone has an HDR-capable television, this is a nice new feature for those folks that do. HDR can really improve your viewing experience, and I’m sure that owners of HDR-capable TVs are happy to have another way to view HDR content on their set.
