Sprint has confirmed that it plans to launch its 5G network in 2019, and now we more of the first cities that'll have access to it.
Sprint says that New York City, Phoenix, and Kansas City will be included in the first group of cities to get Sprint 5G coverage. These markets join Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, and Washington D.C. on the list of Sprint's first 5G cities.
This 5G network will utilize 2.5GHz spectrum as well as Massive MIMO technology. Sprint's strategy includes deploying these Massive MIMO cell sites that can deliver up to 10 times the capacity of existing LTE systems, which means faster data speeds. These radios support split mode, letting Sprint use 4G LTE and 5G on the same radio and deploy equipment that is software upgradeable to 5G without additional tower climbs.
Massive MIMO radios are already live in Dallas, Los Angeles, and New York City, with more coming soon to these and other 5G markets. Engineers are optimizing these radios for 4G LTE service and will then get them ready for 5G use.
