Samsung says foldable smartphone will be introduced this year

Samsung's foldable smartphone may finally be close.

Samsung Mobile CEO DJ Koh says that his company will introduce a phone with a foldable display this year. In an interview with CNBC, Koh said that it's "time to deliver" a foldable device after surveys showed that there's at least some consumer interest in such a device. Koh added that development of the foldable phone is "nearly concluded" and that it could debut at the Samsung Developers Conference in November.

When it comes to the details of the device, Koh didn't reveal much about what Samsung has planned. He did explain that Samsung is working to show consumers why the company made this device and why they should choose it over a tablet. "So every device, every feateure, every innovation should have a meaningful message to our end customer. So when the end customer uses it, (they think) 'wow, this is the reason Samsung made it."

We've been hearing about Samsung's foldable phone since 2015, so it's exciting to hear that the device may finally be close to its official debut. The idea of a foldable phone sounds nice, letting you have a phone with a smaller footprint in your pocket or bag when it's folded, then giving you a bigger screen when you need it for browsing or watching a video. Now we just have to wait and see what Samsung ultimately comes up with.
