More Google Pixel 2 details trickle out ahead of official reveal

We’re now right around one month away from the rumored Google Pixel 2 reveal date, and more details about the upcoming Google hero phone continue to trickle out.

The Pixel 2 does indeed look like the device we’ve seen in leaked images, says a report from 9to5Google, complete with large bezels surrounding the 4.97-inch 1920x1080 display as well as front-facing speakers. The heavily obscured device you see below is said to be a Pixel 2 with a slate gray rear glass window and dark silver back, and while it’s unclear if this color option will launch to the public, it’s at least in testing at Google.

Also expected to be included with the upcoming Pixel 2 is IP68 water and dust resistance, 64GB and 128GB storage options, and electronic image stabilization (EIS) for the camera. Unfortunately, today’s report reaffirms that the Pixel 2 will ship without a 3.5mm headphone jack. Google is expected to include a 3.5mm-to-USB-C adapter in the Pixel 2’s box.

Rounding out the tidbits mentioned in today’s report is that there will be an always-on Ambient Display option; that the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 will have the same specs, save for display size; that both phones will run Android 8.1; and that accessory makers have an October 5th embargo date for Pixel 2 products, which lines up with the phones' rumored announcement date.

While the Pixel XL 2 is shaping up to be a hotly anticipated device thanks to its large display and slim bezels, the Pixel 2 could still be a nice option for some folks. Its larger bezels may be a turn-off for some, but you are getting front-facing speakers in exchange for them, which will make for a better media consumption experience. Plus, it’s not often we see smaller phones with flagship-tier specs.
