New rumors have surfaced today with info about Amazon’s plans for its Alexa voice assistant in 2017.
Amazon is planning to launch Alexa-powered devices that will support voice calls, say sources speaking to Recode. A report from last month claimed that Amazon was considering adding phone call support to Alexa, and now it’s said that the company has decided to go ahead with its plans.
One aspect of the service that’s still unclear is whether Amazon will enable people to sync their current phone number to their Alexa device or if they’ll need to get a new number specific to their Alexa device.
Amazon is reportedly testing Alexa hardware with voice call support, and an announcement is expected sometime in the coming months.
Another feature of this new Alexa hardware may be intercom support. With it, a user on one Alexa device would be able to talk with another person on the end of another Alexa device.
The goal with these new features would be to get Alexa device owners to use their hardware every day or close to it. Being able to make phone calls with Alexa could get people to use their devices more regularly, but it’d have much better odds if Amazon could figure out a way to let those people sync their existing phone number to their device.
