Apple App Store breaks sales records during holidays, New Year's Day biggest single day

Apple App Store iPhone X

One day after Apple said that it was cutting its revenue guidance for Q1 after it saw fewer iPhone upgrades than expected, the Cupertino company has announced some good news regarding the App Store.

Apple's App Store had a record-breaking holiday week, with customers spending $1.22 billion between Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. This marks Apple's biggest week ever, said Phil Schiller, SVP of Worldwide Marketing. New Year's Day was good for Apple, too, with customers spending more than $322 million, which is a single-day record for the company.

Gaming and self-care were the most popular app downloads and subscriptions during the holidays, with titles like Fortnite and PUBG being among the top downloaded games. Other popular titles include Brawl Stars, Asphalt 9, and Monster Strike. Apple says that Productivity, Health & Fitness, and Education apps are proving popular in the new year, with apps like 1Password, Sweat, and Luminosity topping those respective categories.

Lots of people get new phones for the holidays, so it's no surprise to hear that Apple's App Store had a big holiday week and New Year's Day as people loaded up their new devices with apps. Many people get money and gift cards for the holidays, too, which also likely helped contribute to breaking these App Store records.

Have you downloaded any new apps lately that you're particularly excited about?
