There's been lots of talk of 5G lately, and while some carriers don't expect to roll out mobile 5G until 2019 or later, AT&T says that it'll have 5G this year.
AT&T says that it will launch mobile 5G in 12 markets by late 2018. AT&T's 5G coverage will be based on 5G standards, following the 3GPP's completion of the 5G NR standards last month.
There are no details available on which markets will get AT&T 5G first or which 5G devices AT&T will offer. Still, it's exciting to hear that AT&T expects to begin rolling out mobile 5G this year, especially with the promise of ultra-low latency and faster speeds. Here's to hoping that the carrier can pull it off.
AT&T also gave an update today on 5G Evolution, its 4G LTE offering that uses LTE-Advanced technologies to offer faster speeds. The service is currently available in 23 major metro areas and will expand to hundreds more metros, even as AT&T works on rolling out true mobile 5G.
