Mobile MOBA ‘Vainglory’ is coming to PC

Although it's far more common to see PC games ported to mobile (Hearthstone, The Talos Principle, This War of Mine), that formula is occasionally reversed. Super Evil Megacorp's Vainglory is a case in point -- the high fantasy MOBA is coming to both Mac and PC.

YouTube's dark mode reaches Android users

YouTube has taken its sweet time bringing its "dark theme" to Android (iOS users got the option in March), but it's finally here. The streaming video giant has started rolling out the option to at least some Google-powered devices. If you have it on your phone, you'll find it your Settings' General section. It's not certain how soon everyone will get the feature (we've asked Google for comment), but it may take some days to arrive. Don't despair if you're looking at the familiar white backdrop for a while.

Dummy models of Apple's new 6.5-inch iPhone X Plus and 6.1-inch LCD iPhone allegedly leak

Apple 6.5-inch iPhone X Plus, 6.1-inch LCD iPhone dummy units

The iPhone X is currently the only Apple smartphone with a notch, but rumors say that that'll change later this year with the launch of a larger iPhone X Plus model and a cheaper LCD variant. Today images that claim to show dummy models of those devices have leaked.

Photos that allegedly show dummy versions of the iPhone X Plus and lower-cost LCD iPhone have been shared by Ben Geskin on Twitter. The iPhone X Plus is rumored to have a 6.5-inch OLED screen, up from the 5.8-inch display on the iPhone X, but other than that its design looks similar to the iPhone X we've got now. There's a notch, a dual rear camera setup, and no headphone jack.

Meanwhile, the lower-cost LCD iPhone is said to have a 6.1-inch screen. While the notch is expected to be included in this device, Apple will make other changes to help lower the cost from the iPhone X, which currently starts at $999. These changes include using an LCD screen rather than an OLED panel and opting for a single rear camera rather than a dual rear camera setup. Apple may also use an aluminum frame for this lower-cost model rather than stainless steel like on the iPhone X.

Apple hasn't said when it might announce new iPhone models, but if past several years are any indication, an event will happen in early to mid-September. It's been said that Apple may offer the iPhone X and iPhone X Plus in black, white, and gold color options, while the lower-cost LCD iPhone may come in gray, white, blue, red, and orange color options. Speaking of cost, analysts have suggested that the iPhone X could cost $899, the iPhone X Plus may be priced at $999, and the LCD iPhone could come in around $700 or $800.

What do you want to see from Apple's new 2018 iPhone models?

Google Pixel 3 XL appears in new batch of leaked photos

Google Pixel 3 XL hands-on photos leak

After leaking out in a black version earlier this year, the Google Pixel 3 XL has posed for a new set of photos in a white variant.

Photos of the Google Pixel 3 XL were shared by xda-developers forum user "dr.guru", who says that they took the shots. The bad news is that the phone doesn't boot "because it was remotely erased by Google", says dr.guru, but the photos do give us a clear look at one of Google's upcoming flagship phones.

The device features a single rear camera with flash, rear fingerprint reader, and the same Google prototype logo that appeared on the aforementioned black Pixel 3 XL. Around front there's a notch at the top of the screen that appears to feature dual cameras, and at the bottom of the screen is a chin.

Other notable details of these photos include the fact that this phone is listed as having 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, half as much as the 128GB of storage that the Pixel 3 XL that previously leaked had. The phone also identifies itself by the codename "crosshatch", just like the other Pixel 3 XL.

Earlier this year, it was rumored that the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL will launch in October, with Verizon again expected to be the exclusive U.S. wireless carrier. Reports have also said that the Pixel 3 XL will have an OLED display from LG and that it'll have stereo speakers.

This leaked Pixel 3 XL seems to line up nicely with everything we've heard about the phone so far. The notch is sure to be disappointing to some people, but it may be worth it to look past the notch since this is a new flagship with Google that'll get fast OS and security updates.

Based on what we've seen of it so far, what do you think of the Pixel 3 XL?

Amazon may have another smartphone in the works

Amazon's Fire Phone was a disaster by most accounts, but that might not stop Bezos and crew from giving handsets another try. In a speech at the Television Critics Association press tour (where Amazon has been very busy), studio head Jennifer Salke said she has the prototype of a future Amazon phone that would reportedly have a better interface for Prime Video. Salke didn't delve into specifics, to no one's surprise, but she claimed it was "much more intuitive" and that you could even see it in her office. Just let us know when you're ready to give a product demo, Jennifer.

Android users can now get YouTube’s dark mode

In March, YouTube revealed that it was releasing a dark mode for its mobile apps, starting with its iOS version. Now, Android users are beginning to get the feature on their apps.

YouTube added a dark mode to its desktop site last year, and the company says that it became one of the most requested features for its apps. 9to5Google reports that the feature began rolling out yesterday, notifying users with a prompt. It also says that it can be turned on and off in the app’s settings.

Verizon VPN app protects against shady public WiFi

Add Verizon to the list of tech giants that can't resist the temptation to offer their own virtual private network services. The carrier (and Engadget's parent company) has released a Safe Wi-Fi app for Android that uses the encryption of a VPN to protect you against dodgy WiFi hotspots. Ideally, you won't have to worry about a fake access point intercepting your data traffic at the airport or coffee shop. The app even blocks ad trackers that can lead to targeted marketing -- yes, the telecom that got in trouble for aggressive ad tracking is now helping you avoid it.
