RED Lithium is a 3D camera that uses Hydrogen One phone as a viewfinder

There was a lot of hype leading up to the launch of the RED Hydrogen One last year, but since its release, we haven't heard much about the device. That's changing today.

RED recently showed off a device called Lithium, which is a 3D camera that uses the Hydrogen One smartphone as both a monitor and controller. "Lithium is designed to create very high quality H4V images," RED collaborator Phil Holland told Engadget. "It's a lightweight stereo rig featuring two digital cinema sensors. [It] features zoom lenses and is one of the most compact and flexible ways to shoot high quality stereoscopic motion pictures ever."

Details about the Lithium's release, such as the timing and price, are still a mystery, but RED says that it's got "big things in the works" for 2019, so we may hear more later this year.

The RED Hydrogen One doesn't seem to have gained much traction with consumers since its launch, but with its price, specs, and focus on 3D/4V, some might say that it was never intended to be a huge hit with the general public. For those folks with an interest in 3D content, such as filmmakers, the Hydrogen One could be more interesting, especially once this Lithium camera launches.
