Apple sold 46.9 million iPhones and 9.7 million iPads in Q4 2018

Apple today reported its Q4 FY18 earnings, and it turned out to be a record-breaking quarter for the company.

Apple says that it sold 46.9 million iPhones during Q4 2018, up slightly from 46.7 million in Q4 2017. iPad sales weren't so lucky, slipping slightly year-over-year to finish at 9.7 million units sold in Q4 2018. Mac sales fell a bit as well, finishing at 5.3 million units.

Services revenue for the quarter finished at $10 billion, up from $8.5 billion in Q4 2017. The Services category includes digital content and services, AppleCare, Apple Pay, licensing, and other services. Apple's Other Products category grew as well, going from $3.2 billion in revenue in Q4 2017 to $4.2 billion in Q4 2018. The Other Products category includes sales of AirPods, Apple TV, Apple Watch, Beats products, HomePod, iPod touch, and other Apple-branded and third-party accessories.

Quarterly revenue finished at $62.9 billion, up from $52.6 billion one year ago. Service revenue finished at $10 billion, which Apple says is an all-time high. Finally, Apple's net income for Q4 2018 finished at $14.1 billion, which is up from $10.7 billion in the year-ago quarter.

“We’re thrilled to report another record-breaking quarter that caps a tremendous fiscal 2018, the year in which we shipped our 2 billionth iOS device, celebrated the 10th anniversary of the App Store and achieved the strongest revenue and earnings in Apple’s history. Over the past two months, we’ve delivered huge advancements for our customers through new versions of iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad and Mac as well as our four operating systems, and we enter the holiday season with our strongest lineup of products and services ever.”

While iPhone sales stayed mostly flat, Apple's revenue from iPhone sales grew 29 percent year over year to finish at $37.2 billion. That ASP increase suggests that people were paying more for their iPhones, like the iPhone X and iPhone XS, which the company is probably happy about.

Apple reportedly launching pilot program to repair vintage devices like iPhone 5

Apple will repair its computers, iPhones, and iPads if you have any issues with them, but the company has a cutoff and will only repair products from the past five or seven years. According to a new report, though, Apple is testing a new program for repairing older devices.

Apple is rolling out a "Repair Vintage Apple Products Pilot" program, according to a report from 9to5Mac. At launch, the program will offer repairs for devices that are becoming obsolete, like the iPhone 5 (GSM/CDMA) as well as MacBook Air (Mid 2012) models and iMac (Mid 2011) models. 

Today's report claims that Apple will soon add more products to its vintage device repair program, including the iPhone 4s and MacBook Pro (Mid 2012), which will be added on November 30. Apple will then expand its program to include the iPhone 5 (GSM), MacBook Pro (Retina, Late 2012), MacBook Pro (Retina, Early 2013), MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), Mac Pro (Mid 2012) on December 30.

It is worth noting that this program doesn't guarantee that Apple will be able to repair your older product. Instead, Apple will reportedly offer repairs based on part availability. This is still a nice option for folks with vintage Apple products, though, as it means that they've at least got a chance that Apple will fix their older devices.

OnePlus 6 gets OxygenOS 9.0.2 update with Nightscape and new navigation gestures

Today may be the Oneplus 6T's launch day, but OnePlus is also showing some love to the OnePlus 6.

OnePlus today released an update to OxygenOS 9.0.2 for the OnePlus 6. This update is a big one, adding new features from the OnePlus 6T as well as bringing the newest November 2018 Android security patches.

Nightscape is a camera feature that uses HDR algorithms to improve the quality of low-light photos. This update also gives the OnePlus 6 a feature called Studio Lighting, which will detect a human face in the frame and adjust the lighting to simulate professional lighting and enhance face contour.

Other notable improvements of the OxygenOS 9.0.2 update are new navigation gestures, optimized standby power consumption, and the ability to launch Google Assistant or a third-party assistant by holding the power button for 0.5 seconds.

This update is going out in stages, and so while it's starting to roll out today, only a small number of OnePlus 6 owners will get it. A broader rollout will happen in a few days once OnePlus can confirm that there are no major bugs or anything like that.

This is a great update for the OnePlus 6. With it, the OP6 is getting some of the features of the new OnePlus 6T, which could help OnePlus 6 owners feel better about their device and not feel the need to update. Good on OnePlus for showing love to OnePlus 6 owners and treating them to new features from their new flagship device.

OnePlus 6T launches today, T-Mobile offering $300 off trade-in deal

The OnePlus 6T is here.

OnePlus's new Android flagship officially launched today, and for the first time, it's available from a U.S. carrier in addition to being sold by OnePlus. You can buy the OnePlus 6T from T-Mobile with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage for $0 down and $24.17 per month for 24 months, or $580 full retail. T-Mo is selling the Mirror Black version of the OP6T.

If you buy from OnePlus, you can get a OnePlus 6T with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage for $549, an 8GB/128GB model for $579, or an 8GB/256GB version for $629. Also of note is that OnePlus is offering two colors for its device: a glossy Mirro Black finish and a matte Midnight Black model.

While T-Mobile may not have quite as many versions of the OnePlus 6T, it does have a trade-in deal. If you buy the OnePlus 6T on a monthly Equipment Installment Plan and trade-in an eligible device, you can get $300 off in the form of 24 monthly bill credits. Finally, it's worth mentioning that there are some differences between the T-Mobile and OnePlus versions of the OnePlus 6T. The T-Mobile model only has one SIM slot while the OnePlus version has two, for example, and the T-Mo model also comes preloaded with two additional apps: T-Mobile to help you access your account and a Device Unlock app.

The T-Mobile OnePlus 6T is also network locked to T-Mo, but you can request to get it unlocked after it's paid in full and has been on the T-Mobile network for 40 consecutive days. The bootloader on the T-Mobile OnePlus 6T is locked out of the box, too, but is unlockable after the phone is no longer network locked to T-Mobile.

OnePlus says that software updates may be slightly delayed for the T-Mobile OnePlus 6T compared to the version sold by OnePlus. This is due to the "additional level of certificatoin required by T-Mobile on all software releases", but OnePlus and T-Mo say that they're working to minimize this waiting period.

'Super Smash Bros. Ultimate' will offer its own social video hub

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's social element won't be limited to trash-talking your opponents. Nintendo is developing a Smash World service that will give you the chance to post and watch videos (including mobile viewing) on top of "other fun features." If you pull off a devastating win, you could gloat about it in front of the entire world. More details are coming in the future, but the offering will be free and should be available sometime in 2019, well after the game's December 7th debut.
