Windows 'Your Phone' app gives you access to Android files on a PC

If you have an Android device and happen to be a Windows Insider in the Fast ring, as well, you're among the first people who can take Microsoft's "Your Phone" app for a spin. Microsoft has started testing the experimental application, which gives you easy access to the files on your phone from a Windows 10 PC. Sure, you can use third-party and cloud services (or you can email yourself), but the feature promises a more seamless way to access files across devices. When you access Your Phone on a computer, you'll see the most recent snapshots on your Android device. You'll then be able to drag and drop them straight into another app, like PowerPoint if you're doing a presentation.

Huawei supplants Apple as the second largest smartphone seller

While Huawei was already a smartphone giant, analyst numbers released today show that in the last quarter it sold more smartphones than any company in the world other than Samsung. IDC and Strategy Analytics found that smartphone sales slowed overall, a trend that hit Samsung the hardest of the big companies with its sales dropping off by more than 10 percent from last year. In its earnings report yesterday, Samsung said it's moved the Galaxy Note 9 launch up as a result of lackluster Galaxy S9 sales, and it's planning new devices based on foldable OLED technology.

Meanwhile, for Huawei a healthy reception for the P20 Series (we called the Pro version "the best smartphone you'll never buy") and the popularity of its midrange Nova devices delivered sales of 54.2 million units. That beat their projections for Apple by more than 10 million and snagged 15 percent of the worldwide market.

Both analysts found that while Apple's smartphone sales grew, they aren't growing as fast as Huawei and its fellow Chinese company Xiaomi. It could look to pick up the pace with the new iPhones it launches this fall, particularly if they have features coveted in international markets like support for dual SIM cards.

iOS 12 beta 5 hints that Apple may offer dual SIM iPhones

iPhone X hands-on video review

Dual SIM phones are pretty common on Android, but we've yet to see a dual SIM iPhone from Apple. That may soon change.

Code inside iOS 12 beta 5 appears to hint that dual SIM support is coming to Apple's iPhone. 9to5Mac discovered references like "second SIM status" and "second SIM tray status", and there's another that mentions "DualSimDevice".

iOS 12 dual SIM iPhone leak

There aren't many details about when or where Apple might sell dual SIM phones. One thing that does seem possible considering today's leak is that Apple's dual SIM iPhone will accept two physical SIM cards rather than using one regular SIM and one eSIM.

Dual SIM smartphones are popular in many countries around the globe. Travelers use them to have both their main SIM and a SIM for the country that they're visiting, letting them keep their regular phone number while also getting a local cellphone plan. Some people also use dual SIM phones to have both their work and personal lines on one device, negating the need to carry two phones. While we don't yet know much about Apple's plans for a dual SIM iPhone, it's nice to see that the company may finally be planning to offer a dual SIM phone for consumers that want one.

Would you buy a dual SIM iPhone if Apple sold one?

New videos reportedly show dummy models of Apple's 6.5-inch iPhone X Plus and 6.1-inch LCD iPhone

Days after we saw photos that claimed to show dummy models of the 6.1-inch LCD iPhone and 6.5-inch iPhone X Plus, new videos of the devices have surfaced.

Brief hands-on videos with dummy versions of the 6.1-inch LCD iPhone and 6.5-inch iPhone X Plus have been posted by @OnLeaks and TigerMobiles. The two devices share a fairly similar design, with slim bezels all around the display, rounded corners, and a notch. The big difference between the two — besides the size, of course —is that the smaller LCD iPhone has a single rear camera while the iPhone X Plus has a dual rear camera setup.

Apple 6.5-inch iPhone X Plus, 6.1-inch LCD iPhone

Rumors have also said that Apple will use an LCD screen in the 6.1-inch iPhone rather than an OLED like in the iPhone X in order to reduce costs. Another way that Apple will reportedly make this iPhone cheaper is by using aluminum for its frame instead of stainless steel like on the iPhone X.

Apple's three new phones — the 6.1-inch LCD iPhone, a new iPhone X, and the iPhone X Plus — are likely going to make their debut in early to mid-September. It's been estimated that the 6.1-inch iPhone will come in around $700 or $800, the new iPhone X will cost $899, and the iPhone X Plus may cost $999, which is Apple's asking price for the current iPhone X.

Do either of these upcoming iPhone models interest you?

Facebook shuts off access to user data for hundreds of thousands of apps

Facebook this evening announced that it’s shutting off access to its application programming interface, the developer platform that lets app makers access user data, for hundreds of thousands of inactive apps. The company had set an August 1st deadline back in May, during its F8 developer conference, for developers and businesses to re-submit apps to an internal review, a process that involves signing new contracts around user data collection and verifying one’s authenticity.

The goal is to ensure third-party software on Facebook was in line with the company’s data privacy rules and new restrictions put in place in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, in which a third-party developer siphoned user data and sold it to another...

Spotify is now streaming Archie motion comics

Spotify has partnered up with Nerdist to offer motion comics based on new Archie comics. All six issues/episodes feature music and voice acting alongside the original comic illustrations. If you watch Riverdale on CW or Netflix, you’ll be familiar with the characters and their backstories, but the storyline follows the comics and diverges from the television show.

The motion comics are available in Spotify’s mobile app. To watch, tap play and the episode will begin. You’ll be reading, hearing, and experiencing the comic all at once. The text of the comics still appear, but since the comic auto-plays rather quickly between panels, you don’t really get the option to read at your own pace. The graphics also appear a bit small compared to W...

Apple Pay comes to 7-Eleven and CVS later in 2018

Apple Pay is making its way to two of its fiercest opponents. As part of Apple's financial results call, Tim Cook revealed that both 7-Eleven and CVS would introduce support for the tap-to-pay service (and, by extension, equivalents like Google Pay) later in 2018. He also confirmed that Germany would offer Apple Pay by the end of the year. There wasn't any mention of how quickly it would roll out to the two retailers or why they'd changed their mind, but the news likely represents an admission of defeat for the two store chains.

Facebook could take on Musical.ly with singing-focused Talent Show

If you've been pining for a new way to show off your singing chops, you're in luck. Facebook is apparently developing a new show that will have users record their performances and send them in as an audition. According to researcher Jane Manchun Wong, who found the feature in the Facebook app's code, there's a new interface to find popular songs and then record your own rendition of the tune. Wong says that the feature "feels like a cross between Musical.ly and Fifteen Million Merits from Black Mirror."

Turing's newest phone is even more ridiculous than its last

Turing may have gone bankrupt without shipping a single unit of its much-hyped smartphone, but that isn't stopping it from promising another handset. The company has unveiled the HubblePhone (yes, named after the space telescope), and it's even more outlandish than the first. The design would include dual display "decks," one of which would swivel out to help with video recording and similar tasks -- a good thing, too, since it would revolve around a 60-megapixel main camera tucked into a cylindrical section. There would even be notches on the displays with more cameras, including dual variable-aperture 12MP sensors and a depth camera on the main deck as well as a 12MP sensor on the upper deck. And that's just the start of the ambitious claims.

Google talks Android P notch support, says no more than two notches on a device

Google Android P notch support

Android P is bringing with it official support for display notches, and today Google laid out how Android supports notches and some of the "rules" for using them.

Google explains that Android apps should work as intended on a device with a display notch. By default, with no special flags set, the Android status bar will be resized to be at least as tall as the device notch with the app content below it. In landscape or fullscreen, the app window will be letterboxed so that no content shows in the notch area, though developers can choose to render their app in the notch area to give an edge-to-edge experience.

When it comes to the requirements about display notches, Google says that devices may only have up to one cutout on each short edge of the device. That means that you won't see more than two display notches on a phone and that they'll only be on the top and bottom of a device when it's in portrait mode.

We haven't seen any devices come to market with more than one notch — there is that ZTE Iceberg, but that's only a concept for now — but Google has decided to set rules about notches and Android in order to guarantee an enjoyable experience for users. Of course, some device maker could try to spurn Google's rules and include three, four, or more notches on a phone, but it's possible that they wouldn't get access to Google apps like the Play Store if they do.

Unlocked LG Stylo 4 joins Amazon's Prime Exclusive lineup

LG Stylo 4 Amazon Prime Exclusive official

Amazon's Prime Exclusive program is a great way to get unlocked Android phones at a discount, and today another new device has been added.

The LG Stylo 4 is now available from Amazon as part of its Prime Exclusive program. Because it's a Prime Exclusive device, you can get it for less than the MSRP in exchange for getting some preloaded Amazon apps on the device. What's more, the LG Stylo 4 is sold unlocked and is compatible with AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon in the U.S.

The screen on the LG Stylo 4 is a 6.2-inch 2160x1080 panel, and the phone comes with a stylus built-in. LG has bundled some software features with the Stylo 4 to help owners take advantage of that stylus, including Screen Off Memo, which will let you take out the stylus and begin jotting down notes without even turning the screen on.

Also included with the LG Stylo 4 is a 13MP rear camera with high-speed autofocus, a 5MP front-facing camera with a wide angle lens, and 32GB of internal storage, along with a microSD card slot so that you can add more storage if you need it. There's an octa-core Snapdragon 450 processor included with the LG Stylo 4 along with 3GB of RAM, a 3300mAh battery, a USB-C port, and a rear fingerprint reader.

The LG Stylo 4 gives consumers an affordable way to get a new Android phone with a big screen and a stylus. And what's nice is that this Prime Exclusive model is sold unlocked and includes support for all four major U.S. carriers, so if you do decide to take the plunge, you don't have to worry about getting a new phone if you end up changing carriers in the future.

Hole-tastic game 'Donut County' launches August 28th

Have you ever wanted to play as a hole in a video game? No? Well, you're going to get the chance regardless. Indie developer Ben Esposito is releasing his oddball title Donut County August 28th for PS4, iOS and computers (through GOG, the Mac App Store and Steam). The premise remains as absurd as ever: you're playing as raccoons who use holes to take humans' trash, and the holes get larger the more you swallow up. There's a whiff of Katamari Damacy to it, although it's much more puzzle-oriented (you may need to grab a smaller object to manipulate a larger one, for instance).

Honor Note 10 official with 7-inch screen and 5000mAh battery

Honor Note 10 official black

Remember when 4.3-inch smartphone screens seemed huge? Now 5.5-inch and 6-inch screens are the norm, but there are even bigger displays coming to market to push the envelope further.

One such device is the Honor Note 10, which is now official. This new phablet has a 6.95-inch 2220x1080 AMOLED screen with an 18.5:9 aspect ratio. Its battery is equally massive, coming in at a size of 5000mAh.

The Honor Note 10 is powered by an octa-core Kirin 970 processor and it includes CPU Turbo and GPU Turbo features to help give you a performance boost when you need it. There are dual SIM slots included in the Honor Note 10, too, along with a USB-C port, dual rear camera setup with 24MP and 16MP sensors, and a 13MP front-facing camera. The Honor Note 10 runs Android 8.1 below Huawei's custom EMUI 8.2 user interface. One thing it's missing is a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Honor Note 10 official blue

Pricing for the Honor Note 10 will start at 2799 yuan ($410 USD) for the model with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. You can get a model with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage for 3199 yuan ($469 USD), while the top-end model with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage costs 3599 yuan ($528 USD).

A smartphone with a 7-inch screen isn't going to be for everyone, but there are some people who want a massive display in their pocket to help them enjoy videos and games. The good news is that the Honor Note 10 appears to have some fairly slim bezels that should make phone and its 7-inch screen easier to hold.

MoviePass announces price increase, limit on seeing major new releases

MoviePass official

MoviePass has made a name for itself by letting users see multiple movies a month for a $9.95 subscription fee, but soon that price will increase.

MoviePass today announced that it will increase the price of the standard pricing plan to $14.95 per month. The price hike will occur within the next 30 days, the company says, and is part of an effort to reduce cash burn by 60 percent and generate lower funding needs in the future.

Another major change coming to MoviePass is that first run movies opening on 1,000 screens or more will be limited in their availability during the first two weeks, unless they're made available on a promotional basis.

Finally, MoviePass says that it's prepping "additional tactics" to prevent abuse of its service.

MoviePass has had a bit of a rough go lately, including a recent service outage that prevented some users from seeing movies because the company ran out of money to pay for tickets. This price increase and limitation on the ability to see big movies in their first two weeks could help MoviePass with its financials, but they could also drive some users away.

Have you ever used MoviePass? What do you think of these changes that are coming to the service?

The Google Clock app for Android now offers Spotify integration. This means that you can set your alarm to wake you up with your favorite music from Spotify. You can browse your recently played music, use Spotify's curated playlists, or search for specific tunes. And after you switch off your alarm, you'll be able to continue listening to your music through Spotify.

This new feature works with both free and premium Spotify accounts. You will need the latest versions of the Google Clock and Spotify apps to get the feature, and you'll also need to be on Android 5.0 or higher. Google says that this feature is rolling out globally this week.

This is a pretty nifty feature that could help make waking up in the morning better. You can play mellow tunes to help wake you up gently, choose a pumping soundtrack to get you hyped for your day, or whatever else will help you wake up and get ready for your day.

Sony can't stop making money from PlayStation

Sony's new CEO Kenichiro Yoshida has been at the company's helm for just a few short months now, but fortunately, former chief Kaz Hirai left him an already successful company to run. Yoshida has his own designs for Sony, with a three-year plan to focus primarily on the entertainment and imaging businesses. It's important not take the favorable position the company is in for granted, though, so we imagine Yoshida is pleased with Sony's latest financial results released today. There's nothing too extraordinary about the numbers, but Sony did record $17.9 billion in revenue for the three months ending in June, from which it extracted nearly $1.8 billion in profit. And yes, no points for guessing PlayStation is responsible for the bulk of that.

WhatsApp adds group voice and video calling

WhatsApp group voice and video calling

Many people rely on WhatsApp to stay connected to loved ones, and today the service added a new feature for doing just that.

Group calls for voice and video are launching on WhatsApp for Android and iPhone today. You can make a group call with up to four people at once. To get a group call going, start a one-on-one voice or video call and then that the "Add Participant" button in the top right corner.

WhatsApp says that group calls are always end-to-end encrypted, adding that it's designed the calling feature to work reliably around the world in different network conditions.

WhatsApp users spend more than 2 billion minutes on calls every day, so it's clear that voice and video calling is an important feature of the app. Now those calling features are getting even better by letting users get several people on a call at once to catch up, collaborate, and more.

Would Fortnite be a big enough incentive to buy a Galaxy Note 9?

Fortnite mobile

In August, Samsung is going to announce its newest phablet device, what will probably be called the Galaxy Note 9. As is par for the course with any major release, the rumor mill has already put in quite a bit of work to undermine Samsung's forthcoming big reveal and show anyone who's willing to pay attention what's coming down the pipe. And if the rumors pan out --and they probably will-- we will more than likely have a pretty familiar handset on our hands.

The Galaxy Note 9 will look a lot like the Galaxy Note 8 before it, based on leaked images of the handset. We've seen the phablet in several different colors, too, including brown. And the blue model (which is still my favorite color on a smartphone up to this point) will actually come with a S Pen that's yellow and blue.

But, hey, Samsung is going to reposition the fingerprint reader on the back, so there's that.

All-in-all, the Galaxy Note 9 sounds like it is going to be a pretty quiet update. And let me reiterate a point I've said in the past: I don't think that's a bad thing. Not every year has to give us some wildly different phone from the handset it's replacing. As long as it beefs up the specs and offers some significant improvements in the camera department, that's about all we should ask/expect from a yearly update.

But maybe the fact the Galaxy Note 9 isn't going to offer up a huge change this year has Samsung wanting to pull some extra work to make sure it has a fighting chance going into the tail-end of 2018. After all, rumor has it Apple is going to launch a new, bigger iPhone X Plus. So, what can the house that built the Galaxy Note do?

How about nab a huge exclusive? According to reports, Samsung actually managed to get the exclusive launch of the mega-popular Fortnite Battle Royale pegged down. If the rumors pan out, it means the game will be an exclusive title for the Galaxy Note 9 for 30 days. What's more, folks who pre-order the phablet will reportedly get as much as $150 worth of V-Bucks (the in-game currency to buy new characters, emotes, gliders, and more). That's quite the deal, and the exclusive is a huge win for Samsung if it is indeed the case.

But, is it an actual incentive? I do know that there are some Apple fans out there that actually like the fact that iOS devices get some games (like Super Mario Run and Alto's Odyssey, among others) before Android. So that exclusive window is certainly a real bonus to some folks. But is it enough to actually get people to buy a new phone?

I think an exclusive launch window for the Galaxy Note 9 and Fortnite is a big win for Samsung if they did manage to achieve it. But I have to wonder if it's actually going to get anyone who isn't already planning on upgrading to a Galaxy Note 9 to buy one. Is it that big of an incentive? I see it as a pretty great bonus. You're getting a powerful smartphone with top-notch stylus support/features, and you also get an exclusive window with one of the most popular games on the planet. Win-win, right?

What about you? Do you think that Samsung can boost sales of the Galaxy Note 9 if it also offers an exclusive 30-day launch window for Fortnite's battle royale mode? Let me know what you think!

Sony also touts the phone's ISO of 51,200 for low light photography.

Other features of the Xperia XZ2 Premium include a 13MP wide angle front-facing camera, 64GB of built-in storage, and a microSD card slot. There's a 3540mAh battery that you charge using USB-C as well as Android 8.0 Oreo. One thing that's missing, though, is a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium definitely doesn't come cheap, but the good news is that it at least has some high-end features to back up its premium price tag. If its 5.8-inch 4K HDR display has you reaching for your credit card, you can buy an Xperia XZ2 Premium of your own at the link below.

WhatsApp launches four-person group video calling

WhatsApp teased that its messaging app would add a long-awaited group video calling feature several weeks ago, and it's finally here. Both Android and iOS users can now hold audio and video conversations with up to four people. You'll have to start a one-on-one call before you can add the other two people, but it's otherwise straightforward. WhatsApp reiterated that calls are "end-to-end encrypted" like its other chats, and promised that they should work in less-than-stellar network conditions.

Fortnite for Android may not be offered in the Google Play Store

Fortnite Battle Royale official logo

Days after rumors said that Fortnite for Android may launch as a Galaxy Note 9 exclusive, a new report says that Android users may have to jump through a hurdle to get the game when it does release broadly.

Source code included in the Fortnite Mobile page on the Epic Games website suggests that the game may not be available in the Play Store when it launches. The folks at xda-developers dug through that source code and found a line that reads "To get started, please visit this URL on the Android device provided." and another that says "Download and install Fortnite through your browser."

After pressing the Get Started button, the web page tells users that they'll be prompted with some security permissions after downloading the game. "This is necessary to install any app outside of the Play Store," the web page reads.

Fortnite Android not on Google Play Store

These statements suggest that Epic could skip the Play Store and only allow Android users to download Fortnite by sideloading the APK. This is something that a lot of Android users have probably never done, but if there was ever an app that could get them to do it, it's probably Fortnite, which seems to be the biggest game on the planet right now.

As for why Epic might skip the Play Store and have users download Fortnite using their browser, it's possible that they want to avoid paying Google a 30 percent cut of in-app purchases. Apple takes a similar cut of in-app purchases on iOS, but installing apps outside of the App Store isn't really an option for Epic. It's much more feasible on Android, and because Fortnite brings in millions of dollars in in-app purchases, the company may figure that making users do a little more work to download Fortnite from a browser is worth the money they'll save from not having to give Google a cut of their in-app sales.

Xiaomi's transparent phone shows off a dummy circuit board

When we had our hands-on with Xiaomi's Mi 8 Explorer Edition, we expressed our doubts that the circuit board you could see through the transparent rear did not showcase the phone's actual internals, not least because of the board's atypical layout. The company insisted it was real, but it seems that the visible parts are in fact all for show.

New LG Signature Edition smartphone features ceramic back, $1800 price tag

LG Signature Edition V35 ThinQ black

Remember the LG Signature Edition? This luxury version of the LG V30 launched last year with an eye-wateringly high price, and now LG has revealed another ultra-premium smartphone.

The second LG Signature Edition is now official, and it looks to be a luxury version of the LG V35 ThinQ. It's packing a 6-inch 2880x1440 OLED display with 18:9 aspect ratio, a Snapdragon 845 processor, 6GB of RAM, and 256GB of built-in storage, along with a microSD card slot for adding more storage. There are dual 16MP rear cameras on this LG Signature Edition — one standard lens and one 107-degree wide angle lens — as well as a 3300mAh battery and Android 8.0 Oreo.

LG touts that its new Signature Edition phone also includes premium sound quality thanks to its Bang & Olufsen-tuned audio. The phone comes with a pair of Beoplay H9i wireless headphones that currently sell for $499 in the U.S.

LG Signature Edition V35 ThinQ white

Rounding out the LG Signature Edition's premium feature set is a backside that's made of specially processed Zirconium Ceramic that LG says is resistant to scratches.

The LG Signature Edition is now on sale and will be limited to just 300 units. As for pricing, LG is asking 1,999,800 won ($1,790 USD) for its ultra-premium handset. Buyers will have the option of getting their name engraved on the back of the device and on a leather wallet case if they'd like.

This new LG Signature Edition looks like a pretty attractive piece of kit, offering an all-black look with a ceramic back that probably feels great. Most of us probably won't ever handle one given its limited production run and high price, but at least we can ogle images of the device online.

Google is making it easier to reschedule meetings in Calendar

Google is making it easier to reschedule meetings on Calendar — and avoid all that unnecessary Slack chatter — with a new feature that lets participants propose alternative times from within the app itself. The organizer of the meeting is then given the option to review and accept the new time or reject it. All attendees’ availability windows, if their calendars are shared with co-workers, will also now be displayed in a side-by-side view, so it’s easier to propose times that work with everyone’s schedules.

Normally, most meeting time reshuffling has to be done in person, or over email or company chat apps. Google is hoping to cut down on those annoying conversations by helping users automate subtle office interactions right from within...

Dropbox doubles storage for Professional users from 1TB to 2TB

Dropbox just doubled the amount of storage it provides to customers of its Professional tier, from 1TB to 2TB. The company notes in a blog post that the rise in collaboration around “ultra hi-def” files, like 4K video and interactive presentations, means the general conception of how much cloud storage is acceptable for pro work is changing. So Dropbox is deciding to gift its users a bit extra at no cost. The current Professional plan, which is a beefed up version of Dropbox’s standard consumer Plus plan, costs around $200 per year.

If you’re a Dropbox Business user, meaning your company pays for your account, you’ll also be getting an extra 1TB of storage added to your plan. Only teams who pay for Business Standard, which is $12.50 per...

Also included in the update are grouped notifications (shown at the top of this post) to help clean up your lock screen, Do Not Disturb improvements like the ability enable DND until you leave your location, and digital wellness features that'll tell you how much you use your phone and allow you to set app usage limits.

iOS 12 will launch to the public this fall. If you're not running the iOS 12 beta but want to get a peek at what the update has to offer, we took the plunge and loaded the beta on our iPhone X, and you can watch our hands-on video with the update right here.

OnePlus 3 and 3T will be updated to Android P

OnePlus 3T hands-on review

The OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T are starting to get a bit long in the tooth, having launched in 2016, but they're still getting major software updates from OnePlus.

OnePlus today confirmed that it will update the OnePlus 3 and 3T to Android P. The two phones will skip the update to Android 8.1 after being updated to Android 8.0 late last year, though, with OnePlus saying that it'd rather focus its development resources on bringing Android P and "more exciting features and improvements" to the OnePlus 3 and 3T.

There's no word on when the Android P update might be released to the OnePlus 3 and 3T. OnePlus does say that it will release Android P for the OnePlus 6 first, followed by the release of Android P for the OnePlus 5 and 5T and then for the OnePlus 3 and 3T, in that order.

It's great to see OnePlus commit to updating the OnePlus 3 and 3T to Android P. While owners of those devices will have to wait until after the OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 5/5T are updated before they'll get their taste of Android P, at least they now know that that update is coming. It can be tough to predict which Android phones will get long-term support in the form of multiple OS updates, but that's just what the OnePlus 3 and 3T are getting, and this is a move that's sure to build some more loyalty among OnePlus users.

T-Mobile has taken another step toward deploying its 5G network.

T-Mo announced today that it's entered into a $3.5 billion multi-year agreement with Nokia to build out its 5G network.
